Where should the sleeping pad go when in the process of backpacking in the backcountry?

I have a backpacking backpack by Jansport, however there are no straps for the sleeping pad on the bottom of the bag. Being that it is like this, should I put my sleeping pad vertically on the inside parallel to my tent?

If you have a pack similar to the one in the included link, you could strap your pad to the side with the compression straps. Or place it under the top lid and cinch it down tight to hold it in place.
If that is your only option, usually there is a way to attach a tent and pad on a backpack about 1/4 to 1/2 way up from the bottom. If there aren’t any straps for this on the pack there isn’t any rule that says you can’t put some there. You can also place the pad on the top of your pack under the flap.
Be creative. You can use your sleep pad as an inner pad in the main compartment. Just open it up and wrap it inside like a second layer, then put your gear inside. No need to stuff it in rolled up, which usually feels bulky. Or find another way.
