I’ve had more than my share of sleepless nights, including being hospitalized for it after eleven days of not sleeping. I was first prescribed Ambien at first, but that made me way too drowsy and almost zombie-like in the morning. Ambien CR was even worse with that side effect since it was a controlled release tablet.
I was also on Seroquil as well [though not for a sleeping aid]. However, like another answerer said, I wouldn’t recommend it due to the side effects. I was on it for Bipolar but it actually zonked me out so much [even during the day] that there’s a good three month period that I do not remember.
I’m now on Trazadone. It works great for me. The only thing [though I've noticed this with all sleeping aids], if I don’t fall asleep within a reasonable time after taking it [maybe a half hour], it actually makes me not tired.
You can try over-the-counter melatonin aids. My boyfriend takes them every night. Once taking them and you turn off the lights and lay down to relax, the pill naturally increases your level of melatonin, which is the chemical your brain produces that makes you tired in the first place. Personally, these don’t work for me.
Honestly, the best thing you can do is talk to your physician about your choices. They’ll probably start you off on the OTC stuff and if that doesn’t work, then you might get referred to a psychiatrist for a prescription sleep aid. Either way, you should talk to your doctor about anything.
I have HORRIBLE insomnia!
I’ve been on 15mg of Zopiclone for about 4 years now and I can say that with it I get a good nights rest and can now FINALLY (after many years of sleepless nights) not be tired and LIVE!
I highly recommend it (I posted a link below about it!)
Here in Canada its called Imovane
U can get sleeping pills w/ out a prescription. I use unisom sleeping gels and they work just as good as prescribed sleeping pills.
Do some sports like jogging/walking etc, take a bath and goto sleep. Dont take any medications….
I concur with Marisa that Zopiclone – aka zimovane – is very good. Sometimes the antipsychotic quetiapine (seroquel) is used off-license as a sleeping aid, do not use it, too many adverse effects, so stick to zopiclone. Antihistimines (the drowsy ones such as piriton) can work. Also valerian can help to induce a natural sleep.
