An odd array of symptoms. . .any advice?

It all seems to be related…

I get tired when I sit down. Quite often I fall asleep and can’t help it. (i.e. I get extremely tired when driving).
I can take a 20 minute nap and have a dream (which means I was in REM sleep which should take up to 5 hours to cycle into).
My muscles in my body are constantly twitching, almost like the twitching you get when you’re just on the verge of falling asleep.
I have night terrors if I can’t fall asleep right away at night.
I wake up 5 to 6 times a night usually, but will have dreams in between every time waking up.

I eat right, try my best to stay unstressed, don’t sleep too much at night, and don’t sleep too little. Any ideas? It has been suggested that I have mild narcolepsy.

What do you think?
If I were to get a sleep study. . .how do they work insurance wise?

Do insurance companies only pay for them if they find something wrong with me, or do they not cover them at all because they are a "study" and not a "diagnostic test"??

Should I buy my husband a CPAP Machine?

My husband suffers from sleep apnea and it makes it difficult for him to get a good nights sleep. I am also aware that it can be fatal. However, we cannot afford a sleep study for an official Dx, nor can we afford a brand new CPAP Machine. I was considering buying a used one on Craigslist. Any ideas?

Or do I HAVE to go through a dr? I read somewhere that you have go give the company a presecription and they have to make some kind of setting on the machine. Is there anything to this? My Dr said I could do a sleep study but that’s going to be a long ways into the future and I would like to just buy one and see if it helps. Aren’t there ones that automatically detect your breathing stats? If so couldn’t I just buy one and let it dynamically monitor and regular my breathing?

I am suspect of sleep neurologists who keep pushing an apnea diagnosis as the problem (vs. narcolepsy, for example) even if a sleep study shows differently. It seems each dr. is located next door to CPAP machine rentals. I’m wondering if they are part owners or stock holders drumming up business. Just asking…
I’ve been to 3 drs. All said the same thing after stating the sleep tests only showed mild apnea. Sleep apnea is considered a sleep disorder and neurologists are usually the treating physician.

I am a mouth breather during the day and snore really loud at nite with my mouth open. Could I possibly not have sleep apnea and just be a loud snorer? I would be unable to do a overnite sleep study. I snore really loud whether on my back, side, stomach, etc., and Im told my mouth is always wide open.

I am in chronic pain and my doctor said I should get a sleep study to see if I have sleep apnea. But to consult a specialist will run me 0 and then the test is probably going to cost a bunch too. I figured for 0 I could get a cpap machine and a mask and just try the therapy and see if it has a positive effect. Is this a good or a bad idea?

hopeless fore curing insomnia?

I’ve had insomnia for 5-6 years. It’s gotten worse and worse. Some nights I sleep for an hour. Some nights I never get into a deep sleep at all. Once in a while i’ll get a good 7 hours of sleep but thats pretty rare. I had a sleep study, but I actually fell asleep pretty fast that night (very rare) so I don’t think they saw how it usually is for me at night. I’ve been to so many doctors but they all proscribe the same meds that don’t work or give me a set of things to do to have better sleep hygiene (which I’ve tried several times and it never worked). It’s really effected my life. I’m in a bad mood a lot of the time and don’t have to many friends because I’d imagine I’m not the happiest person to be around. I also totaled my car from driving while exhausted and not paying full attention to the road. Can anything ever be done for me or will I just have to live with this?
oops in the title I meant for without the extra e on the end. My bad. (See, its probably from being so dand tired!)

CPAP Machine?

I’ve got sleep apnea, which means I stop breathing several times each night and wake up gasping for air. I’m used to it. But the problem is that I am not sleeping well because it is getting interrupted so much. My dad has had a CPAP for 5 years and both of his parents have one. I will probably end up getting one as well. I plan to have a sleep study done over the summer, at which time they will analyze my body throughout the night while I am asleep. I know that if I have one I will be using it the rest of my life. My main question is how often would I have to change the tubing and the facemask? Would I have to change them at all?
This is the type of mask my dad and his parents use: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3DCpap%2520machines%26fr2%3Dtab-web%26fr%3Dybr_sbc&w=500&h=333&imgurl=static.flickr.com%2F70%2F154016843_14d712a212_m.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Ftattootom%2F154016843%2F&size=83.2kB&name=154016843_14d712a212.jpg&p=Cpap+machines&type=jpeg&no=4&tt=1,943&oid=d34cdd81836d5d3e&fusr=Tattoo+Tom&tit=The+Ever+Faithful+REMstar+CPAP&hurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Ftattootom%2F&ei=UTF-8&src=p

We’ve been treating my son for ADHD for several years and have had problems with the side effects of meds. He’s now on Strattera but it didn’t seem to be helping this school year. So we’ve increased the dose twice (he did have a growing spurt last summer – he’s 14). This still isn’t helping. Well, in going over my symptoms related to possible sleep apnea with the doctor, I had an "ah-ha" moment that my son has the same symptoms. Low and behold he does have a disorder. However it hasn’t yet been diagnosed with a sleep study (coming up next week).

So I just want to put a bug in parents’ ears that if your child is being treated for ADHD and the meds are not working, perhaps you want to speak to your doctor about the possibility of a sleeping disorder.

But for my question…. Has anybody else experienced a child at school who absolutely will not do his work and found out a sleeping disorder was the cause? Please tell me about your story and if treating the disorder helped your child do better in school.
Yes, seeing an ENT and removal of tonsils and/or adenoids is the expected treatment. Thanks for responses!
I’m agreeing that sleeping disorders should be looked into before giving drugs for ADHD. I wish someone would have asked if my son snored years ago!
Thanks for all responses…hard to choose!

What could it mean if you have no REM sleep?

My 15 year old son had a sleep study done and I just got a call to come in for an appointment. All they told me was he has no REM sleep at all? That is after 7 hours solid sleep, with sleep onset in 15 minutes of laying down. The main problem I have with him is he goes to bed about 1 hour later every night, (about a 30 day cycle actually) and if I attempt to disrupt the pattern – it causes him agitation, anxiety, daytime sleepiness. It is a very big problem that my son has an alien sleep pattern.

I apparently talk in my sleep a lot, and it’s not long after I fall asleep. Does that mean I’m entering REM quickly?

I’m being evaluated for a sleep disorder and have a sleep study scheduled for like 3 weeks from now.

I have a 4 year old son diagnosed with this last week and I’m told it can be life threatening..We’ve had the sleep study done and confirmed it. My Pediatric doc. thinks it Neurological, but what’s that mean? Any answers would be greatly appreciated, I don’t sleep much, too scared.

Can you be awake during REM sleep?

I woke up the other night and seemed paralyzed along with my eyes were moving rapidly and I could do nothing about it. Siezure or can you wake up in sleep stages?
My eyes were not twitching they were rapidly moving all over the place, I understand sleep paralization but not my eyes freaking out with no control. I have been in a daze for like 3-4 years, I think due to sleep. I have been to Drs, and a sleep study all looks good.

Insomnia advise please?

I’m a chronic insomniac and have been working with my DR. on the problem for the past 8 years. Any ideas on what can help. Here’s what hasn’t. Gave up caffine, bedroom used for sleeping only (no tv), regular exercise, routine bedtime rituals, not eating after a certain hour, hot bath 90 min before bed time. Making my bed the most comfortable place I know. Hypnosis (cured my smoking habit so I thought I’d try). Fan on in bedroom to drown out noises that could wake me up when I do fall asleep, aroma therapy, calming music, and reading books. OTC’s like including tylonol pm, and Nyquil. (works for a coupled days then doesn’t) RX such as Lunesta, Ambien and Rozerem (to mention a few) all with no results. The only thing that gives relief at all is Xanex, but it’s controlled and after 5 years on it, my tolerance is very high and it’s not working well anymore. Any suggestions? I need to get some sleep! Thanks
**oh, and I forgot to mention all the herbal products I tried. Please help.
I asked the dr about a sleep study, but she says it’s not sleep apnea, so it wouldn’t help. I asked for other benzos and she says I’ll have the same tolerance. I’m on both an antidepressant and an antihistamine, neither of which helped. Some great answers though. As for the pot, if it could be prescribed I absolutely would try, but at this time, it’d cost me my career. We have manditory testing at my job. Oh yeah, I’ve done the graveyard shift too. Same issue only worse. I know it seems I have an answer for almost anything, but keep trying please. 8 years is far too many and I’m fed up. Thanks so much!!
