My husband suffers from sleep apnea and it makes it difficult for him to get a good nights sleep. I am also aware that it can be fatal. However, we cannot afford a sleep study for an official Dx, nor can we afford a brand new CPAP Machine. I was considering buying a used one on Craigslist. Any ideas?

I am suspect of sleep neurologists who keep pushing an apnea diagnosis as the problem (vs. narcolepsy, for example) even if a sleep study shows differently. It seems each dr. is located next door to CPAP machine rentals. I’m wondering if they are part owners or stock holders drumming up business. Just asking…
I’ve been to 3 drs. All said the same thing after stating the sleep tests only showed mild apnea. Sleep apnea is considered a sleep disorder and neurologists are usually the treating physician.

i have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and i sleep a lot each day. my husband doesn’t understand and thinks i just don’t ‘do’ anything all day. i haven’t got my CPAP machine yet. if you have sleep apnea and don’t yet have a CPAP or remember what it was like before you had yours, how long did you sleep each day, assuming you were able to sleep as long as you wanted?
thanks.

I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and just got a CPAP machine. It’s taking some getting used to, and I have used it only during the day so far when I’m awake. Hopefully, I’ll get used to it soon and will be able to use it when sleeping.
My question: What benefits did you users notice? I have extreme daytime fatigue and often feel like I’m functioning at only about 50% cognitively. Do you feel more alert and focused from improved quality of sleep with the CPAP?
I just got the CPAP today. I spent about half an hour with the mask, with the technician monitoring and giving me instructions and etc. When I had my last sleep test, I spent some time awake with it on, and managed to sleep a few hours with it.
I’m not accustomed to anything on or near my face when I’m sleeping, and I have to stay pretty much in one position.
I plan to try to sleep with it tomorrow night. It’s not like I’ve had it for months and am refusing to use it! It’s just new and foreign to me.

I had a wisdom tooth pulled Friday, and it is now Sunday night. Is it safe to use my CPAP machine yet for my sleep apnea? I don’t want to cause a dry socket or anything.

We have tried the nose strips and tried sleeping on his side. I am concerned it might be sleep apnea. It is just recently though. We have been together for 8 years and this just started.

I have sleep apnea and am scheduled to pick up a cpap machine this week. I found them to be uncomfortable when I spent the night at the sleep clinic but I’m going to give it a try. My sleep apnea is moderate to severe so I’ve got to try something to improve my condition. I’ve heard several people say they hadn’t slept so well in years after going on the cpap. Can anyone out there give me a review? If they are bothersome at first can you eventually get used to them?

I have a CPAP machine used for Sleep Apnea. I no longer use it, as I have found relief using a SnoreGuard. I have tried to sell it locally to my city on Craigslist. This has proven ineffective. The original cost was about 00. I would sell it for starting price of 0. Any ideas of other better reached selling websites?
Thank You!!

I know I have sleep apnea. I snore so loud and I have excessive fatigue to the point that I have to sleep more than 12 hours a day. It also runs in my family. I just got a CPAP machine from someone. How dangerous would it be for me to use it? Educated responses only.
Monica- I asked for educated responses only. I am also in the health profession and that doesn’t mean I know everything about everything. CPAP machines are not by prescription only, otherwise you could not buy them anywhere. And If you aren’t even aware that they are for sleep apnea, I am not quite sure how you managed to become a nurse.
Davisk- pneumothorax is not a "hole in the lungs". I have studied cardiorespiratory care. I am also well aware that too much O2 can be dangerous. Also, there are no H2O levels on this machine. Are you meaning O2 levels? And finally, it is not gross. Obviously I am not stupid enough to use another person’s mask! lol.

I’ve got sleep apnea, which means I stop breathing several times each night and wake up gasping for air. I’m used to it. But the problem is that I am not sleeping well because it is getting interrupted so much. My dad has had a CPAP for 5 years and both of his parents have one. I will probably end up getting one as well. I plan to have a sleep study done over the summer, at which time they will analyze my body throughout the night while I am asleep. I know that if I have one I will be using it the rest of my life. My main question is how often would I have to change the tubing and the facemask? Would I have to change them at all?
This is the type of mask my dad and his parents use: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3DCpap%2520machines%26fr2%3Dtab-web%26fr%3Dybr_sbc&w=500&h=333&imgurl=static.flickr.com%2F70%2F154016843_14d712a212_m.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Ftattootom%2F154016843%2F&size=83.2kB&name=154016843_14d712a212.jpg&p=Cpap+machines&type=jpeg&no=4&tt=1,943&oid=d34cdd81836d5d3e&fusr=Tattoo+Tom&tit=The+Ever+Faithful+REMstar+CPAP&hurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Ftattootom%2F&ei=UTF-8&src=p

I have severe sleep apnea. I sleep with a CPAP (continous positive airways pressure) machine. It works great, but my nose tickles several times in the middle of the night! I have to turn it off and scratch my nose before i can go back to sleep. What can i do to stop the ticleing????
The tickle is on the outside of my nose, not inside.

I want to get a CPAP, I’ve been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, but I couldn’t make the appointment for them to find my correct pressure setting. How important is it to know that pressure setting? I want to buy my own CPAP machine but I don’t know what pressure to set it at.
