How to get a good REM sleep?

I’m 15 and I haven’t been getting a good REM sleep lately. When I get home from school I’m so tired that I can’t help but to fall asleep. I’ll fall asleep at about 5 and wake up at 10. My bedtime is 11. When I try to go to bed at 11, I can’t. One time I went to bed at 5, woke up at 10, went back to bed at 11 (btw my wake up’s 5;15) and woke up at my wake up time and I was so sluggish and tired. How can I fix my sleeping schedule?

Please do *not* tell me I am dreaming & forgetting my dreams!! I know for a fact that I rarely get any REM sleep if at all. Read on for details!!

Here’s some background on my personal experience with sleep:

1. I never wake up rested. At all. Except.. [see #4]
2. No matter how interested I am in my college class material or whatever else I’m doing, I get tired & sleepy, then I doze in & out of naps right where I sit. This happens in the morning & afternoon alike, sometimes even in the evening.
3. When I remember a dream, I wake up drenched in sweat. It can be the most calming & relaxing dream imaginable & I still wake up drenched.
4. Only when I remember a dream & wake up drenched do I feel even slightly rested. This happens maybe once a month.
5. It often takes me 30-60 min to fall asleep, unless I am dead tired already. It doesn’t matter how much or how little I think or let my mind wander, I can’t fall asleep. To be honest, 30-45 min is a blessing for me b/c even just 2 yrs ago, it took me 1-2 hrs *every* night without fail.

I know that I get practically NO REM sleep at all in 99% of my nights b/c:
1. I only feel rested perhaps once or twice a month.
2. I only remember a dream or wake up drenched in sweat once or twice a month.
3. I only feel rested when I have memory of a dream *and* wake up drenched.
.:. Therefore, by inductive reasoning, I feel it is safe to assume that the rest of the time, I either do not dream at all or experience utterly useless REM.
If I experience any REM at all, then I must not go into the deeper sleep beyond REM, where a lot of restful sleep takes place.

So my question is:
What can I do to increase my chances of dreaming restful REM & deep sleep on at least a semi-regular basis? My life is suffering due to lack of rest!!!!!
EDIT; Forgot to mention that I am seriously considering the possibility that I have a sleeping disorder (the 1st answer said something similar before I got a chance to add this. I’ll research hypersomnia, thanks). Anyone else have any other ideas on what it could be or where I could start looking?

I also want to add that the chance of it being a mental/mood disorder is pretty slim. It would have been a factor even just 1.5 yrs ago, but these days, I’m strong, pretty happy, & mentally healthy.
EDIT:
Oh & another thing. Does sleeping on your back, side, or stomach have any effect on REM? I may have heard once that it has an effect.

I find it much much harder to fall asleep on my back & a little harder on my side. So I never fall asleep laying face-up & I usually lay on my stomach rather than my side.

Is it possible to skip sleep stages?

For what I’ve heard (I might be with the wrong idea though) dreams happen in the REM sleep stages (or at least those they are remembered) either way, even if it is possible to dreams to happen in other stages I always get the information that they never happen in the first’s sleep stages. Now….When I wake up by my alarm clock I usually look at the time (after having a 8 hours sleep) then I try to get up of the bed but I close my eyes just for a second to "rest my eyes" and I fall asleep imediatly and sometimes I wake up right away and look again at the clock, at it is exacly the same time. Which means I slept less than a minute (possibly just seconds) and in that time I had dreams, and I mean really long dreams, like 30mins to 1 day (in ‘dream-time’ not physical time) I usually have dreams that last for weeks in dream-time but in those seconds I had a really long memorable and elaborated dream. (With a plot and consistence and so on) which means in was a "good" dream. Basically what I’m trying to say is how is it possible for me to skip 2-3 sleep stages directly to REM? or I had my dream in sleep stage 1? And it was a "good" dream like those we only have by a restfull night and by "good" I mean that it wasnt "random" (like those dreams that doesnt make any sence or logic that people have when they have poor sleep). How is this possible?

I read today in an article that to have a good night of sleep, and getting into REM sleep (what I presume is the “deepest” part of sleep) no lights should be on.
I wanted an opinion of someone that maybe is more of an expert in this and could confirm.
2 years ago an incident happened that, since then, made me sleep now always with a light on (little bit ashamed of admitting that…). It’s a little light and normally I put a pillow on my side standing upwards so the light isn’t actually in my face. Now I’m afraid that could be affecting my REM sleep.

Opinions?

Question about antidepressants?

If your REM sleep is important – and I think dreaming is important and healing to our psyches – why should we take medications that suppress dreaming? Isn’t that dangerous? I don’t understand why they market drugs that would suppress what I thought was an impt. part of our sleep cycles.
Antidepressants aren’t sleeping medications.

OK there are a lot of info on this.
Some people say that it’s only REM sleep, others say that it’s a misconception and we dream in all stages, constantly.
Most sites with info say that we have lucid dreams in REM and nonlucid dreams during nonREM.
What’s your opinion?

I slept for seven hours at a sleep disorder clinic. The technician told me that I did not have sleep apnea. He did say, though, that I have NO REM CYCLES. How would having no REM sleep affect me? I have sleep attacks during which I am unable to control my need to lie down and sleep. My doctor wanted me tested for sleep apnea or narcolepsy. I cannot see my doctor until the end of May so I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what no REM cycles does to a person. Thank you.

Drug which can put you into constant rem sleep?

Do you think it would one day be possible? For example a drug which can put you into a Light comatose state so you can experience dreams for hours! In a comatose state your in way too deep to have meaningful dreams and be able to lucid dream. Lets just say a drug which could put you into a permanent stage 1 and 2 sleep cycle which means you would be in constant rem sleep. Was just imagining the possibilities if you had a dream like drug which would put you under for a few hours. In the dream world it would be much longer. Also if you knew how to lucid dream prior to taking the drug. You could construct your own worlds, cities and creatures. I wonder if you could even make intelligent beings with different personalities.
After more thinking I don’t think a drug could completely block out the the deeper stages of sleep. Would it be possible to surgically remove these from your brain? If you could and were put it a comatose state would you be in a constant stage one and two sleep stage? Would human beings be able to survive without stage 3 and 4 sleep cycles? Also sorry to add another question but is it possible to do this?

REM Sleep Distribution?

I’m trying to improve my lucid dreaming through the wake-induced method. I habitually wake up between 7 and 8 in the morning, regardless of when I went to bed or fell asleep. I can then fall back asleep fairly easy until about twelve, and then until about 2 if I want. Most of my dreams happen in these intervals, and I have them most nights. Would this mean I am getting no REM sleep in the first spell, or would there be a session of it starting at, say 6 or so?
My question is if, considering my current sleep pattern, would I be undergoing a REM period before waking up early or not.?

I have just been diagnosed by my sleep specialist after doing an overnight sleep study that I have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. He says that my daytime fatigue and sleepiness is due to the fact that I wake up multiple times a night because of my difficulty breathing (consciously and unconsciously). However, he told me that I did reach deep REM sleep and did dream. So I’m not entirely sure I understand why this makes me tired throughout the day. I understand there are five stages of sleep, so if I wake up during any of these stages, mainly the deep sleep stage, does that mean my sleep cycle starts over? Am I tired because I don’t spend an adequate (and constant) amount of time in deep sleep (restorative sleep)?

And what exactly is the difference between REM and NREM and which one gives restorative sleep?

Thanks in advance! Sorry for all the questions.
Oh and one more thing…

What exactly causes the memory/cognitive impairment and difficulty in concentration?
