Sleep paralysis? help!?

My husband suffers from what we think is sleep paralysis. While there is no health concern, (every resource has said), I hate to see the love of my life, my best friend, in such fear and panic. When it occurs he says he is yelling for me to wake up and help, although all I hear is a slight moan or grunt due to the fact he cannot speak or move. We are going to go to a specialist about it but in the meantime is there anything I can do while its happening to get him out of it quicker? I have only been able to help him calm down a bit and slow his breathing until he can move again but he is terrified when it happens and I feel helpless. Does anyone know what would be the best thing for me to do? Plz don’t say go to doc cuz we are and no he is not still asleep, we have been 100% sure that he is awake and aware of what is going on…..I just want to know a better way for him to get his muscles to awake from his REM cycle. Please help

What do my dreams from last night mean?

So I was just watching a documentary about dreaming and the REM cycle, and in it scientists said "Dreams often tell a lot about the person’s social life. They often express emotional concerns the person is having at the time. They also may tell us about certain events that may happen in the future."

Last night, I had a few dreams that kind of intertwined with each other. Meaning, they all had different ‘plots’ or story-lines, but they happened chronologically without a break in between them.

The first dream I remember having was one where I was battling with this red-headed boy I had never seen before. We were throwing grenades at each other with some kind of grenade launcher. The funny thing was, in my dream I was handling this grenade launcher, but I had to operate it by thinking about an x-box game controller. (In my dream, in order to throw a grenade I had to think about pressing the X button.) I don’t play x-box at all, in fact I’ve only picked up a controller once in my life.

There were a few other tasks I had to do, and I could get out of them by signing this book. It went something like, I had 5 seconds to run to the other end of a hallway and sign a bunch of paperwork "signing myself out" of these battles.

The next dream I remember having related to Nintendo 64′s Mario Bros. You know how you had to go battle Bowser? Well this was similar, but way more twisted. I entered his ‘dungeon’ but before I got to him I had to battle sharks (out of water), and wolves that stood 10 feet taller than me.

I don’t remember how that ended, but the next thing I remember was driving my mom’s car home. Then all of a sudden I was cramped in my friend’s car, driving down this highway I’d never seen before, but it soon turned into my town. THEN, I was back in my car, driving through a neighborhood from my city that I recognized very clearly. Now I had a few other people I didn’t know in my car, and we were driving around. We reached this pizza place (again, one that I’ve never seen or heard of before) called DeZackeries (My ex boyfriend’s name is Zack)…. and I clearly saw him walk in to that restaurant.

When I tried to leave (I was still in my car)..I was driving around, but I realized I was on this elevated plane where this pizza parlor was. Like, the only way to get down was by stairs, and you obviously can’t drive a car down stairs….

That’s all I remember. But after watching that documentary, I’m wondering what my dreams last night mean. Or do they even have a meaning at all? If anyone has any ideas, I’m excited to hear about them!

So basically I sleep at 12 to 1 everyday. What I feel is when I wake up at 6 or 7 I feel great, refreshed and all, but if I wake up with 8 to 9 more hours of sleep I immediately need to sleep more like up until 10 to12. My eyes feel really heavy if I wake up on those times. I read around and found out that your REM cycle lasts for 4 hours so i still what might be happening?my rem cycle ends at like 6 or 7? I’m wondering if this is normal since like i sort of think that my mind might be tricking my body and telling it that its fully awake at 6 and 7 but when it hits the other times its my bodies real feeling.

Addditional Details: When the school year hits I can go with like 7 days without sleep. Sleeping maybe 1 or 2 hours a day. With this sort of wacky schedule my family members constantly told me that I wasn’t living a healthy life. I didn’t feel really tired during those days and didn’t function out of the ordinary but in the end I slept for 24 hours straight. Feeling a bit like a camel now ahaha. Anyways after those 7 days usually my face would look a bit green too. Could this have altered my Rem Sleeping pattern? As much as I hate to admit I have a pretty messed up sleep schedule and eat schedule.

I was having a dream that me and my dad were fighting over the phone. Then right after I hung up on him He called me in real life to tell me how much he loved me and just wanted me to be happy. I instantly started to cry, does that have to do with my REM cycle being disturbed?

Every alarm clock I have ever had has a 9 minute snooze. This seems pretty standard. Is there any logical reason why the snooze would be 9 minutes? Does it coincide with a REM cycle or other circadian rhythm?

Is this stupid? this is gonna sound kinda insecure..?

I am in my 4th year of university majoring in economics and in the 4th year all the classes are 3 hour seminars in which a small classroom of ppl discuss the weekly readings. Missing classes is looked down upon since you loose marks and plus it really looks like you are not taking things seriouly since most ppl at this stage of the game are plannig on some type of grad school and are presumably making mostly As and B+s. (participation overall is worth 20% of the final mark). Its not like previous years where you can miss a class here and there and no one cares/notices. At anyrate, eversince about october i have been suffering from a sleep disorder which my doctors have not been able to specifically diagnose untill lastweek – I have nocturnal myoclonus which means that my legs involuntarily spasm during sleep which apparently wakes me up about every 10 minutes (the sleeper has no memory of this) and disrupts my REM cycle, rendering me extreemly sleepdeprived – it is hard for me to be at my academic best this way as i cannot concentrate well, and am sick CONSTANTLY because lack of sleep weakens your imune system. Anyway i long ago dropped 2 of my 4 classes so that i could make good marks since the sleep thing was affecting my school work. My profs are aware of my problem and very supportive if it so i should be able to get a decent participation mark despite being absent sometimes. So now I am finally being treated for my illness. The other day, i had made a comment in class and someone responded by saying "oh yes, such and such as talking about that last time…" and some ppl giggled and rolled thier eyes at me. ‘last time’ I had an important doctors appt at the sleep clinic that i couldnt reschedule. Also, because i am severely sleep deprived, i sometimes say things that are a little strange because, well frankly its had to put sentences togeather in this state. Afterall I have trouble staying awake in class! That day it occured to me that ppl might actually be judging me for missing classes occasionaly!! Dont ppl realize that ppl have good reasons to miss classes?! Im still doing well in the classes – I have a high B+ in both of them and am aiming for an A. Are ppl actually judging me? Im not someone who generally cares what others think but this is just one more thing in my life right now that makes me go ‘ugh’.
sorry, i didnt realize that it would be that long lol!
i just started treatment the other day since my condition was only recently diagnosed specifically – before my doctors only knew it was a sleep disorder but not what kind so they couldnt treat it. Now i take pills and i feel a lot less tired

Why is it that when you wake up, and your still tired, you press the snooze button, but 10 minutes later the alarm goes off and you feel wide awake? I know no sleep actually occurs, in order for you to enter back into a rem cycle it can take 30 minutes to an hour, with an average time being 45 minutes. So your not actually resting, your more or less just in a passed the fuck out state of mind.

Also what is with it with the time of the snooze timer itself, is there some actual science behind the notion that it takes roughly 10 minutes for your body to wake up and the sensation of being tired to leave your system, or is it just some random number the clock makers came up with and put on the clock to try and make some extra money by at one time saying our alarm clock can do something that no other alarm clock can?

I have a quick question about dreams?

You know when your dreaming, and everything is kinda calm. Even situations that would normally seem scary are presented calm? Because you have not been asleep long enough.

What is that one point called in a dream or REM cycle (or something) where the dream can suddenly get filled with action and terror, or seem more real?
What is that called?

If you snore and it prevents the REM cycle from occurring does the brain skip it or do you remain in an extra long deep sleep?

please list sources if you use any =) thanks this is for a report

Did I have my first lucid dream?

I never really knew about lucid dreaming tell yesterday around 8pm. When i looked it up it really seemed cool so I told myself I want to have one tonight. I did some tips like laying in bed and telling myself "I am awake" and I even woke up 3 hours before I am suppose to wake up and got some water to, and I tried to time my REM cycle with that. But finally I was asleep ( I think ). In my "dream" I was laying in bed, telling myself "I am awake" (weird huh?) and I saw the closet door creep open and I sprung off the bed and yelled "oh no!!" and slammed the door. Like I knew what was in the closet and I was trying to avoid it. But when I closed it I though "wait I have to be dreaming!" and I was "IM DREAMING!!" and I tried to fly but I just jumped up and down and float a little bit and then I woke up. Was that my first lucid dream?

Is this Sleep paralysis?

Something wiered happened the other night. I probably went to bed around 9:30 ( VERY early for me usually I’m asleep by 1) and I woke back up at about 2, I wasn’t tired so I watched some TV for 30 minutes or so. At 2:30 I was trying to sleep again and the last time I can remember looking at the clock was at 2:44. Almost seamlessly I feel like I fell asleep and woke back up to find myself completely paralyzed, I remembered reading something about sleep paralysis while I couldn’t move and was fine for a minute but then freaked out a little bit when I thought I heard footsteps… Anyway I woke up to see the clock at 3:07 which makes no sense because REM sleep I thought was where this paralysis occurred. And I thought the REM cycle only occurs after 1 hour of sleep or so. Does anyone have an explanation?
By the way I’m 17 and in pretty good shape with no nueral problems…

How sweet would this be for a movie?

Myself during a REM cycle, and woken up at the end explaining the dream (with pictures)

It would be split screen, filmed in ‘night mode’
THe left would be me sleeping. The right would be me reading the dream out of my dream journal (I know that the dream will correspond with the REM because I will have my cousin wake me up after I start to go into a NREM cycle.

How does that sound?

It isn’t supposed to be a ‘movie theater’ film, or in a Sundance film festival. It is supposed to shot how dreams are in the eyes of the beholder. There shall be no plot. It is Un Chien Andalou meets Andy Warhol’s Bl0w J0b

You almost always remember a dream you are awoken from, so there is no problem there.

As for the synchronization, it will not be perfect. But it is kind of the meaning, that it is all in my head and you can not make the physical and mental link if you are on the outside looking in.
It will be whatever dream I have. No dreamscapes, just me describing it.

Hello,

I’m curious, how long does a REM cycle last for someone who is sleep deprived. I’m on vacation. Being a polyphasic sleeper, I’ve trained my body to go into 5 REM cycles during the day. However… school is starting back up. I feel rested and very focused when I’m polyphasic, which is why I want to continue to be a polyphasic sleeper while in school, also more time to study and to work. I need to figure out how long a REM sleep cycle lasts for a sleep deprived person. Could someone help me?

PS: The technique behind polyphasic sleep is to deprive your body from sleep so you adapt to a polyphasic pattern.

Do people with narcolepsy have vivid dreams?

I have been googling about some symptoms for my recent desire to sleep all day, and one of the possibilities (Never mind that I am not a doctor or anything similar, I’m just one of those people googling things on the internet when they feel ill.) is narcolepsy. In one article it mentions that people with narcolepsy go into the REM cycle pretty much upon sleeping. So since REM is when you have dreams would it be correct to assume that people with Narcolepsy have longer and more intricate dreams?

I personally have had dreams that have lasted for hours with immense detail I feel like iv read a book or seen a very complicated movie.

Thank you for the time!
