Is it okay to take two antihistamines together?

My ENT doc gave me Xyzal for allergies and my psychiatrist gave me Vistaril for anxiety. Both are antihistamines, only Vistaril has a sedating effect though. My ENT is out of the office, my psychiatrist isn’t sure, and the pharmacists have no clue.

Bipolar Disorder?

I need help! My wife of one year on 10/14 suffers from Bipolar Disorder. She also has a thyroid problem that is slowly returning to normal with medication from an Endocrinologist. Everything I read about Bipolar Disorder says that the thyroid has a lot to do with brain chemicals and hormones and affects depression greatly. She is going through a very bad bout of depression right now, and has even said that she doesn’t love me anymore. She is seeing a psychiatrist, and has an appointment with a psychologist Thursday night, so she is taking steps to make herself better, but as her thyroid improves, her depression worsens. Is this just the disorder telling her that she doesn’t love me? My family and I have never had to deal with anything like this before. I am trying to be strong and hang in there, because my love for her has not wavered, but I’m having a very hard time coping. Anyone with experience with this horrible disorder have any advice for me?

Bipolar Disorder?

I received some really startling and upsetting news today. I asked a psychiatrist for a consult and his opinion is that i have bipolar disorder. I have a lot of racing thoughts that Im finding harder to control, and apparently thats a major symptom. Will this disorder get worse with age? Will I pass this on to children? After reading medical journals and the other comments on this board about lithium, Im not sure if I want to take it. Are there any other treatment options out there?

Who should I go to for sleep problems?

I’ve struggled with sleep for almost 10 years and I’m almost 19. I took blood pressure medicine (which had the side effect of drowsiness) from when I was 9 to 13. Obviously, I didn’t have high blood pressure, but the medicine made me sleepy, at first anyway. I started to fight it after a while and it eventually barely effected me. I just recently graduated from high school and when I knew I had to get up early every morning, I would go to sleep between 12 and 2 every night. Not sure if that’s average for teenagers or not. Now, I’m taking a semester off, but I go to college in the spring. I don’t have a "real" job, so I am always staying up late. I usually go to sleep between 2 and 5, but I’ve also been known to stay awake the whole night without a minute of sleep and try to function the next day. I’m not interested in taking medicine again. I just want someone to talk me through my problems so I can figure out why I do this. Sometimes, I don’t go to sleep because I simply don’t get sleepy. But most of the time, it’s because I fight it off. I’m convinced it’s a mental problem and can be resolved without medication.

So, do I go to a therapist, psychiatrist, or physcologist?

I have reason to believe my boyfriend could be bipolar. His mood is never stable and he is sometimes very depressed with no energy but also often has elevated energetic periods. I would like to go with him to talk to a psychiatrist and see if he has this mood disorder. How can I break the ice into this conversation and have him agree to be tested without offending him?

I have been told by a previous psychiatrist that it is possible that I have bipolar disorder and diagnosed me with bipolar disoreder NOS. I struggle with obsessive thoughts that occur on a cycle, when my mood is not stable. They usually focus on death, sex, and religion, but also have been about certain people or activities. I cannot control them at all. They get so bad that I can’t concentrate in class or study.

My boyfriend has bipolar disorder and goes to his psychiatrist once a month. His visits are real quick like 10 minutes long. She just asks how are you today, are your pills working, any stressers? Then she sends him out the do. Other than that "therapy" he doesnt do any talk counselling. So is counselling an important thing when it comes to bipolar disorder?

Is there anything stronger than ambien cr?

I’ve been on Ambien cr for a couple of years and it doesn’t put me to sleep. Sometimes I take two and it still doesn’t work. I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Are there stronger meds out there?
I see a psychiatrist for meds. I’ll definately tell him. It seems mostly likely I have just built a tolerance to it, as some of you have suggested.

A friend of mine is unable to pay for a psychiatrist to prescribe drugs for her bipolar disorder. She has been clinically diagnosed and her bipolar disorder is seriously affecting her quality of life and she is unable to function normally. She is having suicidal thoughts and she really needs help. Are there any gov’t agencies that can help her?

I have been diagnosed with dysthymia as well as various phobias and IBS. I also have very severe chronic insomnia that my psychiatrist says is part of my chronic depression. I tend to sleep 2-5 hours a night, if at all. When I do sleep, I have very vivid, disturbing nightmares. So far, I’ve tried the drugs Prozac and Celexa. Neither helped with the depression; Prozac worsened my IBS and made me lose weight, although it did help a little bit with the insomnia, and Celexa killed what little was left of my appetite, made me lose ten pounds (which is pretty bad for someone with an already low BMI), worsened my sleep disorder and made me feel like I had the flu (constant puking, dizzyness and achyness).

My shrink recommends that I try Zoloft next, but a big part of me wants to stay away from SSRIs because I reacted so badly to the ones I’ve taken (both of which were supposedly "mild SSRIs"). Lately, I’ve been looking for atypical antidepressants that are helpful for sleep disorders and have little risk of weight loss or digestive side effects. I came across Remeron in my search, and a friend of mine who has been on nearly every antidepressant on the market recommends Trazodone. I’ve researched them both, and both sound equally attractive to me. I like Remeron for its reduced risk of digestive side effects and weight loss and for its superb track record for curing sleep disorders. Still, the risk of weight gain holds me back a little. I could stand to gain 10 or 20 pounds, but the idea of putting on any more weight than that does not sound at all appealing to me, and gaining obscene amounts of weight is not unheard of with Remeron. I like Trazodone, again, for its good track record with sleep disorders and lowered risk of dependency. Still, I don’t like risk of diarrhea/constipation. Also, my friend who recommended the Trazodone told me that it’s usually prescribed with another antidepressant (he took it with Zoloft). I’m very medication sensitive, even before going on psych meds (even small doses of baby aspirin and antibiotics almost always give me stomach problems), so I’d like to avoid taking a cocktail of meds if I can.

Anyone have any experience with either of these drugs? If so, how did they effect you? Which one do you think would be better for my situation?
