Other than narcolepsy, what conditions could account for or contribute to a decreased latency to onset of REM sleep (i.e., individual begins dreaming less than 3 minutes into sleep cycle)?

I do not sleep at night (frequent awakenings, cannot fall or stay asleep) more than 1-2 hours. I was told that I have depression, SAD, cirrcadin sleep disorder, eating disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness. Two polysomnograms confirmed the sleepiness. After much research, I truly believe I have some type of narcolepsy with both primary and secondary symptoms i.e. fall asleep during classes, have to sleep in my car between classes, hallucinations, memory loss and a close relative who does have it. Any ideas as to what or where I should go to be effectively diagnosed with anything at this point in time.

When I was younger I use to sleep through out the night, but with talking, screaming, sleep walking on average. Now I have problems going to sleep and waking up several times per night. I can easily stay in bed 12 hours straight and still feel sleepy thought my day. I’ve gone to my doctor and had a blood test, but he says nothing wrong. Is a regular blood test good enough to see if you have Narcolepsy or thyroid problem.

Can anyone help me find a documentary on narcolepsy?

In the UK a few years ago, there was a documentary about narcolepsy (the uncontrollable compulsion to fall asleep). For my psychology project part of it is to do with narcolepsy, and I would like to see this documentary again, but I don’t know where to find it. Can someone help me out?

Thank you

Is it possible to have a mild case of narcolepsy?

Is it possible to have a mild case of narcolepsy?
Also could someone not get it until they are 17? Just wondering. I noticed yesterday and today I just suddenly got really tired out of nowhere until I fell asleep (it took about 1 maybe 2 minutes for me to fall asleep) and then I woke up and felt perfectly fine and alert. I am going to try to keep track of it to see if it persists and if it does I may go see a doctor. Can it be controlled?

Can someone suffer from insomnia and narcolepsy?

Remember, there are different types of narcolepsy. It’s not just where you fall asleep when you are walking around. Please only reply if you know what you are talking about or suffer from one of these conditions because I am truly interested in the answer.

narcolepsy?

I’ve been having trouble waking up in the mornings.
I’ve usually woke up at about 8:40 every morning.
But I don’t go to sleep untill 11:30.

Tonight I fell asleep at 11:30, but at 9:40 I FORCED myself to get up, even though I was still VERY tired.

Is this narcolepsy? Or something else?
Also, I haven’t been having any dreams..

I also can’t force myself to fall asleep at a specific time.

What do I do when his Narcolepsy kicks in?

My boyfriend has had this condition for a while. Even was in action the first time I met him, but anyway, he’s 6′5 and 228lbs worth of muscle EVERYWHERE, we are having a great sex life as a couple. At first this didn’t get in the way, now he will literally be a second from orgasm and will become dead sleep weight on TOP during or before the orgasm. Mind you he’s penetrated and all or even during oral fast asleep with everything as he left it, myself being 5′8 150lbs I can’t really take it anymore; I’ve seen charts of him being sterile, but still, I don’t want to take chances of getting pregnant through this; I’ve only been able to get away about 40% of the time because of position or how much muscles I have that night. What should I do when his Narcolepsy kicks in?
On top is in with the 40%. There’s a whole bunch of rolling a such…but I’m thinking….

I’ve been from doctor to doctor and we’re still working on what on Earth is wrong with me - I’m having increased fatigue, by now it can be called exhaustion. I can’t concentrate, at times I can barely lift my arms or walk, and sometimes I find myself slurring my words I’m so tired. I had a sleep study done and they found that I have more REM sleep than normal and the onset is much quicker. Rather than having increasing time periods of REM sleep, mine are uniform and last a long time. My sleep specialist has ruled out narcolepsy because the onset is not severe enough, but says that the information indicates only that I am very tired, though of course this is something to continue looking into. I literally need 15 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period to function properly, while only a couple years ago I needed about 7. When I search around online for sleep disorders having to do with REM, the only thing that I find is REM Behavioral Disorder, having to do with a lack of REM, and as a result acting out the dream. I do not have that.
What other disorders are there that either result in exhaustion and an increase in REM sleep or just the latter?

I’ve had mild narcolepsy and cataplexy. I manage it w/o drugs, mostly, with naps and sometimes a good night’s sleep. In the beginning I took some antidepressants against the cataplexy and a stimulant against the daytime sleepiness, but quit when I started having babies. Now, three years later, I’m finished nursing my children and will look into something to help the daytime sleepiness in the afternoons (driving, etc.)

What’s out there now for cataplexy. I hated taking antidepressants and would rather not start them again. Any advice?

Sarina
I have heard about Xyrem. Any experience with that or other drugs from those who know about narcolepsy and have experience with the current drugs would be much appreciated.
