Sleep problems…any ideas?

Im hoping someone can give me some good advice. I have a horrible time trying to sleep every night. I used to take Lexapro because I have serious anxiety issues (PTSD). I began taking the medication simply because I couldn’t sleep. I had to stop taking the Lexapro b/c my husband and I are trying to have a baby, and it needs to be out of my system. I was doing okay for many months off the medication, but recently, I started taking fertility drugs and those have increased my anxiety (the dr. says it’s because of the rise in hormone levels). Anyway…when I try to sleep at night, I have these horrible anxiety problems. It’s almost like that feeling you get when you know you’re in trouble. (Heart beats really fast, and I get that weird burning feeling in my chest, neck and face–ya know what I mean?) Sometimes I can take a Valium and sleep okay, but Im afraid of not being able to sleep without those if we get pregnant. Anyone have any good drug-free alternatives?
I might try the music…I can’t take any diphenhidramine (sp?) which includes over the counter sleep aids and benedryl. (Doc’s orders…they actually make sleeping worse).
Sigh…no melatonin allowed, either, while trying to concieve. Thanks for your suggestions tho!!

Don’t call me a retard. I have my reasons :3
I thought I was going to be up all night doing what I was going to do, and blah blah…But it turns out I have to get up early tomorrow to help out at work x_x So, would it be bad if I take three sleeping pills? They are called Melatonin. They are the 1mg ones. The cup of coffee was pretty big too @_@

I’ve tried Melatonin in different dosages over the past three years or so, but it hasn’t been any help. I’m eighteen years old now, and the doctor that my insurance covers doesn’t want to prescribe sleep aids, though I’ve suffered from only sleeping two to five hours a night since early childhood.

I tend to have trouble falling asleep, and I ALWAYS wake up after each REM cycle (rather than following the 1, 2, 3, 4, dream, 1, 2, 3, 4, dream pattern that people are supposed to, I wake up after each dream part. Also, I suffer from severe nightmares at least once every night (most times more like two or three times a night).

On Friday in health we were talking about suicide and depression and my teacher said some people take pills to kill themselves. I take 3 mg of melatonin to help me sleep at night and it says take 1 but sometimes I take 2. How many would it take to kill someone? I’m really nervous I don’t want to overdose or something-Will 2 kill me one night or something??? I’m realy scared now
What would happen if someone took too many? Would they pass out and would have to be saved or do they die immediately?

I have been using Melatonin Stress Relief nightly due to insomnia issues, and today had a wine cooler at a friend’s place. I finished it off probably 2 hours ago, and don’t usually take my Melatonin until roughly 10 pm. Should I skip tonight’s dose, or is it still safe to take?
I was told it’s OK to take it nightly. I’ve been using it since late April. I haven’ drank since November so was really annoyed with myself that I even did this.
It’s an hour past your time here, Nancy. I had a feeling you’d post to this :) Thanks.

I am thinking about making some chamomile tea and having a melatonin (I’ve been having a hard time falling asleep before 4-5am) will this be ok to do? I had tylenol about 3 hours ago.

So for the past 1-2 years i’d say, i never feel refreshed when i wake up. It seems no matter the hours i get of sleep, i feel crappy in the morning. i feel groggy forever it seems it takes me like 1 hour to wake up or more. you know, where our eyes keep shutting down and your voice feels all groggy and you dont have any energy. feeling more tired than when you went to bed.

theres no difference to me whether i get 6 hours or 9, i still feel horrible. i think the average people should get is 8 i believe but that and 7 hours still i feel the same.

i have trouble falling asleep but i take melatonin to knock me out yet i still feel very groggy in the morning and sometimes the melatonin makes me sleep too long i cant hear my alarm so its bad for when i have work early morning the next day.

i used to be able to sleep so much better like 1 year ago. i would naturally feel tired at like 11-12 on friday nights and then naturally wake up at like 8-10 and feel good. i never feel goodwhen i wake up.

i work weird shifts i work full time so im not in high school anymore, i graduated last year. i usually get off at 11 pm so i dont go to bed til like 1-2 cause i gotta eat, take a shower, etc. you know.

i dont know if it has to do with the REM cycle being interuppted or something. because usually i will wake up at like 8 am and then fall back asleep and wake up at like 10-11 and feel horrible, is it because its the middle of the rem cycle/?

so please help?

I think yes . Melatonin is a neurohormone produced in humans by the pineal gland. Melatonin governs the body’s circadian rhythms. Melatonin is also a potent antioxidant. Give me other Answer.

I’m sending a package with the U.S. this week. I’ve searched for what I can and cannot ship through the post office, but I can’t seem to find a definitive guide. Am I allowed to send Melatonin (a natural over-the-counter sleep aid supplement) and tea bags through the mail?

What is melatonin and how might it act on plants?

I know that with some antidepressants tryptophan is contraindicated because it can interact badly with the medication, but I can’t find any info on whether you can safely take tryptophan with Abilify.

I think that when I was on my MAOI, melatonin supplements were off limits too–so can I continue to take those as well?

Darn my psychiatrist for being on vacation! :)

How to cure insomnia (or help it)?

So I was pretty much born with insomnia, if that’s possible. The only time I cried when I was a baby was when my mother tried to put me to bed. Even when I was in early elementary school I would be up until 2 a.m. before sleeping, and then have to wake up and go to school exhausted, and then at the end of the school day, I would be completely energized, and I would stay that way until I fell asleep and woke up again. I stay up for like two or three days at a time if I don’t seriously make myself go to sleep. Then I crash and sleep for like 24 hours. I have tried everything I can think of.
Not doing anything 2 hours before bed except reading or relaxing.
Drinking warm milk.
Taking a hot shower.
Exercising during the day
Progressive muscle relaxation
"Counting sheep"
Deep breathing
Visual imagery
Taking Melatonin (I think thats what its called)
and a bunch of other stuff, but I still can’t seem to make myself go to sleep every night, or I just lie down and close my eyes for like 2 hours and nothing happens.

I have a summer college course, and its begins at 9:20 each morning and with my sleeping habits, it’s very hard for me to work with this schedule.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can sleep at night!?

***NOTE**** I have been to a doctor, and they just want to prescribe me sleeping pills which a) my parents don’t approve of and b) my medical insurance doesn’t cover because I’m only 17.

Does it sound like I have a sleep disorder?

I have had trouble falling asleep for as long I can remember. I am 14 by the way. I try to get to sleep at about 9:30 P.M. but can’t fall asleep until about 2:30 A.M. almost every night. And when I do fall asleep, I fall into a real deep sleep and wake up at about noon. I am always tired throughout the day. And I can’t seem to fall asleep before 2:30 no matter have much sleep I got the previous night.

When I was younger I had a bad problem with bed wetting and it still occasionally happens. I also slept walk. I remember camping with my neighbor and had to sleep in their parents tent. The next day she told me that I had almost beat her up in my sleep. I haven’t slept walked in about 2 years now though.

And sometimes I get real bad cramps in my legs. Like my muscles are rolling. I am also told that I am a kicker.

My mom thinks that I might have enuresis but she is not a doctor and has not talked to my doctor about it. Right now I am taking melatonin and it is helping some. Before I started taking it, I wouldn’t dream, or so it seams. Now I am getting very vivid dreams.

Whenever I am wakened before I feel like I’ve gotten enough sleep, it is like an actual physical pain to get up because I am in such a deep sleep.

Sorry for going on for so long. I was just wondering if it sounds like I have a sleep disorder, and if so, which one?
I’m going to talk to my doctor next month and see what she says but I just want to know some of the possibilities. Thank you! = )
My dad said that he has similar problems but not so severe now. So it might be genetic but he never got it checked out, Oh and 2:30 is on a good night. Most of the time it’s around 3:00 – 3:30 A.M. I am homeschooled so I don’t have to worry about that in my schedule but I do want to be on a good schedule with the people around me.
No I’m not afraid of wetting. It rarely happens anymore.
