What does each stage of sleep do?

Assuming the stages of sleep are:
Stage 1- light sleep
Stage 2- no eye movement, bursts of brain activity
Stage 3- The first phase of deep sleep
Stage 4- The second phase of deep sleep
Stage 5- REM Sleep

I know what REM sleep does, but what chemicals or hormones are released to cause these effects in each phase?
What does each stage do, and what reactions take place to cause any changes whilst in these sleep phases?

I know scientists have proven that leptin and ghrelin levels (the hormones that control appetite and hunger levels) are influenced by too little sleep and thus lead to weight gain. However I never eat more or exercise less when I haven’t slept well, so I was wondering if my sleep deprivation would nonetheless lead to weight gain??
No stupid answers such as "almost always" Ginny Lee! I want an answer based on scientific evidence. How should a body gain weight if you don’t exercise less or eat more?

I have trouble falling asleep days before I get my period. Why does this happen? Why do the hormones affect sleep? Has anyone else had this experience? How can I get to sleep easier?

29 year old female, one year post total hyst. I am not on hormones because i cannot afford them. I keep waking up at night my body will jerk one big time a few times a night and wake me up suddenly. When i get up in the mornings for coffee i turn on the tv or computer and several times have found myself falling asleep sitting up and waking up with the same jerk in my body almost falling off the couch. I really need to hear from other young women going through surgical menopause. I feel like i am losing my mind.Serious answers only please.

My Dr said that I should be feeling very sleepy after a breastfeed (due to hormones at letdown) but at night I can’t sleep for around 4 hours (thus why I’m always on Yahoo Answers). I sleep for approximately 3 hours a night and the result is I’m like a zombie during the day and can’t handle even rocking my 6 week old to sleep.

Anyone else experience this?

Bipolar Disorder?

I need help! My wife of one year on 10/14 suffers from Bipolar Disorder. She also has a thyroid problem that is slowly returning to normal with medication from an Endocrinologist. Everything I read about Bipolar Disorder says that the thyroid has a lot to do with brain chemicals and hormones and affects depression greatly. She is going through a very bad bout of depression right now, and has even said that she doesn’t love me anymore. She is seeing a psychiatrist, and has an appointment with a psychologist Thursday night, so she is taking steps to make herself better, but as her thyroid improves, her depression worsens. Is this just the disorder telling her that she doesn’t love me? My family and I have never had to deal with anything like this before. I am trying to be strong and hang in there, because my love for her has not wavered, but I’m having a very hard time coping. Anyone with experience with this horrible disorder have any advice for me?

What medicines are used to treat bipolar disorder? Do they contain hormones? Are there other treatments other than medications?

I know that teenage girls go through a point where their emotions ‘go crazy’ do to hormones, but when you are a teenager how do you know if it’s just hormones, or if it’s bipolar disorder?

I have an extremely bad period, and on one of my previous questions I was told that it’s ridiculous that my mom won’t take me to the doctor. It’s pissing me off because I’m concerned that it could be something serious — I simply want to check if it’s something serious or nothing to worry about, but she yells at me saying she doesn’t want to pay 60$ to be told that I should go on birth control. I mean, I don’t really want to go on it either because I don’t want it to screw with my hormones. But there’s got to be other things to help it, right? Every month I have to deal with: Being bent over and moaning with pain, throwing up the whole first day, being nauseous for the 2 days following, and I’m taking painkiller as often as I can for the whole 8-10 days (10 days once but haven’t had it for that long recently, so basically 8-9 days) of my period.
The past month, I’ve been less hungry. It’s not that I don’t mind making something to eat, no problem. I just don’t feel like eating anymore. Most of the time I’ll go a whole day without eating until dinner. It might be because I never see my parents anymore and then when I do, they ignore me.
I’ve been asking my mom to take me to the doctor constantly since last month — I was at my dad and stepmoms house in Arizona when I got my last period and she said "Maybe I should talk to a doctor". Well… that never happened. Now she keeps talking about homeopathic bullcrap. The only thing she got me were some pharmacy vitamins that are basically like giant Smarties. I stopped taking those last week because I now have a really bad cankor sore. Tonight I got mad at her for ignoring me and she told me to take some stupid homeopathic stress relief pills. But now I’m dizzy as eff, and that’s probably not good. I don’t know if this helps, but I also have some homeopathic sleeping pills because I have insomnia. They don’t work so I just deal with it.
Basically my mom is pissing me off because: She’s putting me on homeopathic bullcrap that DOESN’T work and won’t take me to the doctor because of my horrifyingly bad period because she doesn’t want to be told about birth control, when there could actually be something very wrong with me. Advice please???
Additional Details
Also, the glands in my jaw/neck area hurt a bit. Something to ignore?

Hormones causing sleep problems?

What has worked for teens with sleep problems? My daughter is not in school now, she is happy with her dancing, no problems, but if it is hormones, what can help her? We’ve tried reading, baths, she even wears the sleep mask to make her room dark…

My daughter is 13 and has been having trouble falling asleep. She dances 3 nights a week and you would think she’d fall asleep easily, but I’ve heard hormones can cause problems with falling asleep…
