My father is a very overworked man in his mid-40s. Recently, he’s been trying to juggle working full time with starting a business, and this and a slowing economy have caused him to become extremely stressed. This stress then led him to develop insomnia (almost complete inability to sleep), where he’s slept a total of 3 hours in the past 3 days and nights. Today (day 4), my family and I have noticed that he has begun to say very strange things, act very strangely, and do things that make no logical sense. Some of the things he says are also completely fictitious, and are said in such a way that they make little sense.
This has happened once before, 6 years ago, where work related stresses elevated to the point where he was experiencing identical symptoms (with the addition of mild aggression). This resulted in my family’s need to take him to a hospital, where he was given a very potent sleep-inducing drug. After an 8 hour "rest", he was completely back to normal, and has shown no signs of these symptoms returning since.
Could the combination of extreme stress and insomnia result in such behaviour?
I am very worried for him and my family, and I will appreciate any feedback on this.
Thank you all in advance

I have a 5 week old kitten from the animal shelter, and have had her for about a week now. The last few nights she has been waking me up several times during the night wanting to play. I understand she is a kitten, and that is what kittens do, but is there any way to break her of this? I work full-time and go to college full-time (including summer school) so sleeping is very precious to me.
I tell her no, and push her away, or put her in her favorite spot to sleep in, but she will come back thinking I am playing with her. I don’t mind her sleeping with me, I just don’t want her trying to play when I am trying to sleep. Should I make her a bed in my walk-in closet and some toys and a litter box? What do ya’ll do to break your kittens of playing during bedtime.
Last night, I played with my kitten before we went to bed, and she ran into my closet. I didn’t hear her for a while, so I went in to make sure she was OK. She was sleeping in a shoe box in there. I left the closet door open and let her sleep in there… I am sure it was a one night thing and she probably won’t be staying asleep in there, but she did let me sleep. She didn’t try to play with me until I was waking up.

Help! My 14 month old son has been sleeping through the night since he was 3 months old, in his own room since he was 5 months old. He started walking at about 11 months and has never had problems sleeping even while teething. Recently, the last 2 months or so, he has stopped napping almost completely. If I lay him down for a nap he will scream until he makes himself sick. The only time he will nap now is when I lay down with him, once he is asleep I get up but he will only sleep for about 30 minutes. If I lay with him for his entire nap sometimes he will sleep for 2 hours or more. We are also having problems getting him to sleep at night, I have been laying him down awake for months with no problem until now. The screaming at naptime has also carried over to bedtime, and he will cry for hours if I let him. He also wakes up crying in the morning and from naps. I start his bedtime routine at 8 and he finally falls asleep around 11, is up at 7 and then sleeps with me until 10. Any ideas?
My son has always been a very happy content baby, until these sleep problems started. Now he seems to be very ill and cranky all the time and has also become very clingy(he has always been a mamas boy but now it is extreme, doesn’t want anything to do with anyone but me). If I do get him to take a nap, after he wakes up crying he is impossible the rest of the day( wanting to be held, crying if I put him down) until bedtime and then the bedtime fight begins. There is nothing wrong with him medically, I think he is just not getting enough sleep. he averages about 10 hrs a night but does not nap everyday) How can I get him to sleep more when he is fighting it so much. Full-time co-sleeping is not an option, we both sleep terrible when we co-sleep(we are too aware of the other person and sleep very lightly).
Thanks for the input so far, Nothing has changed recently. I am a stay at home mom and my husband works all the time so I can stay home and raise our child. No changes except his sleep pattern.

My boy has slept wonderfully since the day he was born. At around 2 months he started sleeping through the night, always for 8-9 hours, plus naps during the day.
During the last month, he has been getting up at least once, sometimes twice during the night. Sometimes we can feed him and he goes right back to sleep, sometimes he just cries for a while.
At first I thought that he was going through a growth spurt and he just needed some extra food but he hasn’t grown and it has been going on for a lot longer than a growth spurt.
My husband went back to work 3 weeks ago after being on daddy leave for 8 months (this started a few weeks before he went back). So while hubby is getting used to working again, I work full-time and am 15 weeks pregnant with our second child. We need our sleep!
Any ideas why he’s getting up or what I can do to help him sleep more soundly?
The sleep problems started before dad went back to work and it was always me who got up with him.
We also feed him right before bed and have even tried giving him bigger bottles (usually he only drinks 4 oz at a time) but he won’t eat it, he falls asleep first.

So for the past 1-2 years i’d say, i never feel refreshed when i wake up. It seems no matter the hours i get of sleep, i feel crappy in the morning. i feel groggy forever it seems it takes me like 1 hour to wake up or more. you know, where our eyes keep shutting down and your voice feels all groggy and you dont have any energy. feeling more tired than when you went to bed.
theres no difference to me whether i get 6 hours or 9, i still feel horrible. i think the average people should get is 8 i believe but that and 7 hours still i feel the same.
i have trouble falling asleep but i take melatonin to knock me out yet i still feel very groggy in the morning and sometimes the melatonin makes me sleep too long i cant hear my alarm so its bad for when i have work early morning the next day.
i used to be able to sleep so much better like 1 year ago. i would naturally feel tired at like 11-12 on friday nights and then naturally wake up at like 8-10 and feel good. i never feel goodwhen i wake up.
i work weird shifts i work full time so im not in high school anymore, i graduated last year. i usually get off at 11 pm so i dont go to bed til like 1-2 cause i gotta eat, take a shower, etc. you know.
i dont know if it has to do with the REM cycle being interuppted or something. because usually i will wake up at like 8 am and then fall back asleep and wake up at like 10-11 and feel horrible, is it because its the middle of the rem cycle/?
so please help?

Something other than Melatonin?
I kid you not, this is my fifth day without sleep.
No, I am not on drugs. Just extremely stressed and busy trying to balance work, an internship, and school full time (finals).
My hectic schedule should be dying down by the end of next week,
but until then, I need a quick fix.
Anybody have any cures?
Additional note guys: I don’t smoke weed!
Sorry, haha.

I’ve got an interview coming up to work full time night shifts, I’ve had delayed sleep phase disorder for as long as I can remember. Working nights would be perfect for me, as I don’t even feel tired till a few hours after sun-up, so… Would telling my interviewer work in my favor or put them off?
Cheers!

I can not sleep. I work full time and I’m a fulltime student working on a PH.D, what would be the best sleeping pill for me to take that I won’t become addicted to?

This problem is something i have been dealing with for over 2 years now and i just want relief.. I tried several different methods including bedtime routine, warm baths, drinking herbal teas, using my bed for sleep only, i don’t take naps through the day, i got to the gym daily and nothing seems to work. i’m up till 3-4 am then wake up so tired and i have no motovation which make taking care of a 2 yr old very hard along with going to school full time for massage therapy. I’m really at a loss here can anyone give me advice on how to fix this.. also i currently have no insurance to get proper sleep medication.
i have taken benadryl for so long that i grew a tolerace to it also i found when i take it i’m hyper instead of sleeping i’m cleaning my house in the middle of the night.

My son is 4 and is autistic. He has a horrible sleeping pattern. I know it is common in these kids to have sleep problems. Does anyone know what I can do to help him sleep? I work full time and go to school and I am exhausted. I feel like I still have a newborn some days. Please answer only if you are a professional or have children with this disorder. Thanks a bunch in advance for any ideas?

For the past couple weeks i have had trouble with sleeping..sometimes i cant fall asleep at all. I think it has to do with my different times of sleeping…since im a full time college student i stay up late at night studying and take naps during the day. On weekends i’m out till the wee hours of the morning partying…so i def dont get enough sleep and take naps during the day as well. So when i really need to sleep in order to be ready for a really big exam i cannot fall asleep. Right now its getting to the point where im thinking about going to a doctor. My parents who are both doctors told me to get professional help, i want to know if there is a way of curing it before i do go to get professional help with this.
Thanks for all your help! I actually decided to listen to my parents and get professional help because i cannot do this anymore. I have finals coming up and i need tons of rest in order to do well.
