Similarly, if what we call life and the world, etc. is just another elaborate dream of a being greater than ourselves, will that creative center be God? Are we simply emulating by our dreamworlds this super being?

Please don’t say that dreams are merely resolving our daily endeavors. It’s so weak.
What I mean by "emulating" is that we’ve inherited the same "mental blueprint" as the creator of the "initial" dream.

I’ve found that I dream about things that’s very important at the time. Hence by feeding my mind with certain information I can direct my dreamworld. Through the dreamworld I can even access the future developments of a situation.
Because I can access the future developments of a situation I can alter the outcome by making pysical or mental changes to my plan and see how that going to play out, making me MASTER OF MY DESTINY.

For my GCSE english presentation, i’ve decided to talk about dreams.

My research has led me into finding out about the 5 stages of sleep and, of course, REM- where most dreams occur.

I’ve tried to go into more detail about exatly what it is, but all i can find are legnthy jargony essays that MUST have been written by oxbridge professors. Being a 15 year old with a relatively short attention span, i just cant be bothered trying to pick apart exactly what it is they’re saying and sifting through all the confusing junk i don’t actually need to know…

Can any of you guys help me? Here is what i have so far in my initial notes:

Most dreaming occurs during this final stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement ‘REM’. REM sleep is characterized by eye movement, increased respiration rate, increased brain activity. The brain and other body systems become more active whilst muscles become more relaxed. Dreaming occurs because of increased brain activity, but voluntary muscles become paralyzed.

Anything else i should know? Can you point me inthe direction of anything else that might be relevant to my presentation?

Thankyou!
To A A:
Who the hell is Michael Stipe?
And, funny as it was, what the hell does that have to do with my question??
XD
To JanStolz:
Yep, thanks. ^_^

What are your recurring nightmares about?

I’ve been trying find a pattern in mine…the theme of most of my nightmares is about being trapped and running out of time, sometimes in a maze sometimes in a room so I figured a part of my subconsciousness feels trapped and wants to break out…do you have "theme" in your nightmares/dreams?

Shouldn’t vitamin b6 keep you awake? What’s the science behind it? For the past week I’ve been taking b6 and melatonin before bed and I’m having pretty wacked up dreams. It does help me fall asleep, but I wake up around 6 AM and can’t fall back asleep for about 30 mins. Is it safe to keep taking?

Please do *not* tell me I am dreaming & forgetting my dreams!! I know for a fact that I rarely get any REM sleep if at all. Read on for details!!

Here’s some background on my personal experience with sleep:

1. I never wake up rested. At all. Except.. [see #4]
2. No matter how interested I am in my college class material or whatever else I’m doing, I get tired & sleepy, then I doze in & out of naps right where I sit. This happens in the morning & afternoon alike, sometimes even in the evening.
3. When I remember a dream, I wake up drenched in sweat. It can be the most calming & relaxing dream imaginable & I still wake up drenched.
4. Only when I remember a dream & wake up drenched do I feel even slightly rested. This happens maybe once a month.
5. It often takes me 30-60 min to fall asleep, unless I am dead tired already. It doesn’t matter how much or how little I think or let my mind wander, I can’t fall asleep. To be honest, 30-45 min is a blessing for me b/c even just 2 yrs ago, it took me 1-2 hrs *every* night without fail.

I know that I get practically NO REM sleep at all in 99% of my nights b/c:
1. I only feel rested perhaps once or twice a month.
2. I only remember a dream or wake up drenched in sweat once or twice a month.
3. I only feel rested when I have memory of a dream *and* wake up drenched.
.:. Therefore, by inductive reasoning, I feel it is safe to assume that the rest of the time, I either do not dream at all or experience utterly useless REM.
If I experience any REM at all, then I must not go into the deeper sleep beyond REM, where a lot of restful sleep takes place.

So my question is:
What can I do to increase my chances of dreaming restful REM & deep sleep on at least a semi-regular basis? My life is suffering due to lack of rest!!!!!
EDIT; Forgot to mention that I am seriously considering the possibility that I have a sleeping disorder (the 1st answer said something similar before I got a chance to add this. I’ll research hypersomnia, thanks). Anyone else have any other ideas on what it could be or where I could start looking?

I also want to add that the chance of it being a mental/mood disorder is pretty slim. It would have been a factor even just 1.5 yrs ago, but these days, I’m strong, pretty happy, & mentally healthy.
EDIT:
Oh & another thing. Does sleeping on your back, side, or stomach have any effect on REM? I may have heard once that it has an effect.

I find it much much harder to fall asleep on my back & a little harder on my side. So I never fall asleep laying face-up & I usually lay on my stomach rather than my side.

Is it possible to skip sleep stages?

For what I’ve heard (I might be with the wrong idea though) dreams happen in the REM sleep stages (or at least those they are remembered) either way, even if it is possible to dreams to happen in other stages I always get the information that they never happen in the first’s sleep stages. Now….When I wake up by my alarm clock I usually look at the time (after having a 8 hours sleep) then I try to get up of the bed but I close my eyes just for a second to "rest my eyes" and I fall asleep imediatly and sometimes I wake up right away and look again at the clock, at it is exacly the same time. Which means I slept less than a minute (possibly just seconds) and in that time I had dreams, and I mean really long dreams, like 30mins to 1 day (in ‘dream-time’ not physical time) I usually have dreams that last for weeks in dream-time but in those seconds I had a really long memorable and elaborated dream. (With a plot and consistence and so on) which means in was a "good" dream. Basically what I’m trying to say is how is it possible for me to skip 2-3 sleep stages directly to REM? or I had my dream in sleep stage 1? And it was a "good" dream like those we only have by a restfull night and by "good" I mean that it wasnt "random" (like those dreams that doesnt make any sence or logic that people have when they have poor sleep). How is this possible?

I have been taking 10mg of ambien every night for a little over a year. Suddenly I feel extremely anxious and I keep having suicidal dreams even though I do not feel suicidal. Can I just stop taking the Ambien? I cannot handle feeling this anxious for much longer.

I just read an article which said that in REM sleep more dreams occur than nREM but in REM you are less conscious because the dreams make less logical sense.
and nREM dreams are more logical and less visual
also read that it’s possible you dream throughout nrem constantly but the dreams are very low intensity.

Ive always heard that it takes 90 minutes to reach REM sleep, and that dreaming is associated with REM sleep. If this is the case, then why do I have dreams (some of which are real vivid at times) from half hour naps? I’ll only be asleep for about half an hour or 45 min and during that time I will have a dream. Does this mean i reach REM sleep faster than some people?

I rarely ever sleep anymore. If I do I have horrid dreams. I would love to have just one night of sleep that lasts over 5 hours with no dreams!
I live alone, and no I have no significant other to sleep with. That probably would help but that isn’t a solution at the moment.

I saw someone mention this briefly on Facebook. Essentially, it’s supposed to flash a light(?) that’s not bright enough to wake you up, but is bright enough to make you consciously aware of dreaming. It sounds pretty freaking awesome if you ask me. I mean, think about it, have the ability to do whatever you wanted in your dreams…all the time?
Also, you’d probably be able to remember your dreams more often.
Thanks for any info you can give :)

What's wrong with my REM sleep?

I’ve been having major sleeping problems for awhile (2 months), I can sleep, but I haven’t been getting REM sleep… I’ll sleep like I passed out, but when I wake up, no dreams nor any rest… I’ll be exhausted. It’s been taking a major effect on my mood and grades and relationships. I went from A/B student, and since this has started I have D’s in three core classes… The last day of school is in 4 weeks, and I have projects due and end of course exams coming up next week… But with this exhaustion, I can’t think straight nor can I even focus on these important things. Ive been depressed, dizzy, and seeing things… I’ll see people and think they are someone else that I knew. I’m Iron- deficient and I’m Bipolar, so if those are affecting me at all as well please take them into consideration. Thanks. I just need to know what to do, I need help about this severely… Help?

Why am I having dreams so early?

I work for a company that does security at coal mines and I work 8 PM-8 AM, by the time 2 AM rolls around I start drifting off here and there. I just sit in my car the entire shift and can hear an electrical generator surging that’s about 200 feet away on a 10 second cycle. I have my seat leaned back about halfway when I sleep and only do so in 15-20 minute intervals, the major things I’ve noticed are that i fall asleep much easier in my car than my bed, as I’m drifting off my body feels like it’s getting numb and gets tingly when the generator surges, and I always have a dream in the few minutes that I’m asleep and can remember it down to the finest details, I’ve been researching this for the past few days and learned that dreams mainly occur in REM sleep. Is it possible to reach that stage of sleep so fast? And would I be able to wake up as easily as I do if I really was in REM sleep?

Sleep paralysis and deep REM sleep.?

During Sleep paralysis are you aware of the noise in the real world? Have you ever been stuck in sleep paralysis and dream you’ve woken up only to realize you were actually still asleep? During REM sleep (dreaming) are you aware of noise in reality? In my dreams sound gets transferred into visual stimuli, but it happens instantaneously. I am acutely aware of sound in reality even in dreams. So how is it that sound can transfer to visual stimuli instantaneously? I hear a bang and I visual related stimuli, but in a cause and effect or linear progression events. Like a pot falls to the floor and makes the bang in my dreams. The pot starts falling before the bang, I hear the bang in reality and it corresponds to the visualization in my dreams. Do you understand? Please give me your interpretation or explanation or experiences.
