I have just been diagnosed by my sleep specialist after doing an overnight sleep study that I have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. He says that my daytime fatigue and sleepiness is due to the fact that I wake up multiple times a night because of my difficulty breathing (consciously and unconsciously). However, he told me that I did reach deep REM sleep and did dream. So I’m not entirely sure I understand why this makes me tired throughout the day. I understand there are five stages of sleep, so if I wake up during any of these stages, mainly the deep sleep stage, does that mean my sleep cycle starts over? Am I tired because I don’t spend an adequate (and constant) amount of time in deep sleep (restorative sleep)?
And what exactly is the difference between REM and NREM and which one gives restorative sleep?
Thanks in advance! Sorry for all the questions.
Oh and one more thing…
What exactly causes the memory/cognitive impairment and difficulty in concentration?

Last summer I had a month and a half of waking up at 4 am, only to fall asleep ten to fifteen minutes before my alarm went off…It eventually stopped and I was able to regain my normal sleeping patterns…
It felt like to me, that I would go to sleep (anytime between 8-10) and finally hit my REM sleep, have a crazy dream (always different, not very memorable or particular) and then I would be kicked out of my REM pattern…unable to go back to sleep…
For some reason, at four o’clock I would wake up, and be unable to regain my deep sleep…
Only now, its happening again…I am under stress, but not an unbearable amount..I do suffer from depression…could that be whats causing it?
I’m not sure, but its tiring…
Any ideas?

If you snore and it prevents the REM cycle from occurring does the brain skip it or do you remain in an extra long deep sleep?
please list sources if you use any =) thanks this is for a report

At the moment I do 11pm-7am. However I’d like the extra hour, and I’m also about to start a new voluntary job which involves travelling across London in the morning, so that extra hour would help me not to be in so much of a rush.
I wouldn’t be getting 7 hrs of sleep a night, since I rarely fall asleep when my head hits the pillow. It usually takes me about 30-60 mins. So some nights I’d only be getting 6 hrs of sleep. Would that be enough? I have read that the body actually copes better with 6 hrs than 8 hrs, because REM cycles last 90 mins, and therefore if your sleep time is divisible by 90 mins, your body will feel more rested because it won’t have been awoken in the middle of deep sleep. Is that true?

I remember back in a psychology class we learned about the sleep cycles. I don’t remember the technical terms for it but I do remember learning about the REM stage. Which is apparently where most dreams take place. I thought I recalled them saying that is your most deep sleep and it takes a few hours to get to that stage. My question is, how is it possible for me to lay down to sleep, have an extremely vivid dream, then wake to find I have only been asleep for 20 or 30 minutes? Is this normal?

I fall asleep within 30 mins or longer usually but when I am tired, it takes about 20. I stop coffee for 3 months. I smoke and drink on weekends. Is this abnormal as it takes a person usually 7-10 mins to fall asleep. I hardly get much deep sleep or REM sleep. WHen I wake up in the night, it takes me 1 hr to get back to sleep. When, I sleep late at weekends, I can wake up at 8 even though I sleep at 5. I’m so tired so I have to close eyes for 1 hour. Is it beer? I’m usually tired at daytime and can’t work properly. I always take long to fall asleep. How can I sleep better? Could it be sleep cycle change as I am approaching my adult age, I’m 19. It pisses me off that parents and mates take a shorter time to fall asleep and sleep longer and better than me. Appreciate your help! Need solutions fast, not to sound like an arsehole.

I mean, I sleep good, but I only go into DEEP sleep every so often. But when I do, I have very vivid dreams, and I love that, because I feel refreshed and ready to go, as opposed to not wanting to wake up if I dont go into deep sleep.
So if I take melatonin, will I get addicted to it, or will there be negative side effects?

Have you ever wondered why some of our dreams just feel so realistic, and you wake up confused on what just happened? What makes it more realistic to other dreams? I know the waking up slightly in the middle of a deep sleep or something, that helps you memorize the dream, but that doesn’t explain to why it feels so realistic to those dreams that don’t feel that realistic.

I have a lot of trouble getting a good nights sleep. I go to bed every night at about 10. I dont have to be up until 6:30 so I get at least 8 hours. However my fiance gets up somedays as early as 3 or 4 to go to work. Eventhough hes very respectful and tries not to wake me I still wake up. Once he leaves for work I fall back asleep until 6 or 6:30 When 6 comes I have the hardest time ever trying to get out of my bed and waking up. Him getting up 2 hours before me really throws off my sleep cycle and by the time I’m asleep for 2 more hours after he leaves I’m in REM sleep and a deep sleep.
Does anyone have and ideas to help me out and be able to wake up more easily.

All my life I have had the ability to fall asleep (at night or when desired, not like narcolepsy) within minutes if not seconds. And I fall asleep, to REM sleep, without fully going through the cycle, it is deep sleep from the first second. Whether it is just being excessively tired or what, but lately it seems that at night I am working or reading at night in bed and suddenly, without even realizing, I fall asleep within maybe 5 seconds. What has become alarming is that I have been having a text messaging conversation with a person and from being fully awake and alert in one text message i have gone to sleep to the next text message. I really dont know how other way to explain this better. Is this something to be worried about? Is there any medical condition? Could it be a symptom for something else (aside from being tired)? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I like the way Benadryl makes me sleep. I have a deep sleep and very vivid dreams. I take 1 Benadryl and 1 Melatonin every night. Am I doing myself harm?
I am having trouble with sleeping because I am depressed. NO! I will not go to the Dr and take Anti-Depressants! I think they are poison. I have been doing this for 2 months now. And my age is not important.
Ahhhhhh! All you people are ****ink crazy!

ok so in the movie inception they have a machine, as you probably know, it simply regulates the amount of somnacin ( a drug specially designed for REM sleep ) that goes through the body. now, to my understanding it induces immediate REM sleep, and maintains it. during REM sleep your brain waves are more active than when you are awake. meaning to immediately induce REM sleep and maintain it you would have to essentially have an "upper" and a "downer".
the drug would have to induce deep sleep but also increase brain activity. the goal is to pass by the rest of the cycle and skip directly to the REM sleep and keep the REM sleep going for as long as desired.
they had it calculated out that five minutes equals like five hours or some thing please correct me because i know im wrong.
now can such a drug be created?
