Dreaming during the deep sleep stage?

Is it possible to dream in the deep sleep stage? Or does it ONLY occur during the REM stage?

I am curious because I’ve heard Evanescence lyrics from one of her songs – Imaginary:

"Oh how I long for the deep sleep dreaming, the goddess of imaginary light".

What does each stage of sleep do?

Assuming the stages of sleep are:
Stage 1- light sleep
Stage 2- no eye movement, bursts of brain activity
Stage 3- The first phase of deep sleep
Stage 4- The second phase of deep sleep
Stage 5- REM Sleep

I know what REM sleep does, but what chemicals or hormones are released to cause these effects in each phase?
What does each stage do, and what reactions take place to cause any changes whilst in these sleep phases?

Please do *not* tell me I am dreaming & forgetting my dreams!! I know for a fact that I rarely get any REM sleep if at all. Read on for details!!

Here’s some background on my personal experience with sleep:

1. I never wake up rested. At all. Except.. [see #4]
2. No matter how interested I am in my college class material or whatever else I’m doing, I get tired & sleepy, then I doze in & out of naps right where I sit. This happens in the morning & afternoon alike, sometimes even in the evening.
3. When I remember a dream, I wake up drenched in sweat. It can be the most calming & relaxing dream imaginable & I still wake up drenched.
4. Only when I remember a dream & wake up drenched do I feel even slightly rested. This happens maybe once a month.
5. It often takes me 30-60 min to fall asleep, unless I am dead tired already. It doesn’t matter how much or how little I think or let my mind wander, I can’t fall asleep. To be honest, 30-45 min is a blessing for me b/c even just 2 yrs ago, it took me 1-2 hrs *every* night without fail.

I know that I get practically NO REM sleep at all in 99% of my nights b/c:
1. I only feel rested perhaps once or twice a month.
2. I only remember a dream or wake up drenched in sweat once or twice a month.
3. I only feel rested when I have memory of a dream *and* wake up drenched.
.:. Therefore, by inductive reasoning, I feel it is safe to assume that the rest of the time, I either do not dream at all or experience utterly useless REM.
If I experience any REM at all, then I must not go into the deeper sleep beyond REM, where a lot of restful sleep takes place.

So my question is:
What can I do to increase my chances of dreaming restful REM & deep sleep on at least a semi-regular basis? My life is suffering due to lack of rest!!!!!
EDIT; Forgot to mention that I am seriously considering the possibility that I have a sleeping disorder (the 1st answer said something similar before I got a chance to add this. I’ll research hypersomnia, thanks). Anyone else have any other ideas on what it could be or where I could start looking?

I also want to add that the chance of it being a mental/mood disorder is pretty slim. It would have been a factor even just 1.5 yrs ago, but these days, I’m strong, pretty happy, & mentally healthy.
EDIT:
Oh & another thing. Does sleeping on your back, side, or stomach have any effect on REM? I may have heard once that it has an effect.

I find it much much harder to fall asleep on my back & a little harder on my side. So I never fall asleep laying face-up & I usually lay on my stomach rather than my side.

My Son has a deep sleep disorder which means he spends most of his sleep cycle in very deep sleep. This reduces the amount of oxygen to his brain, gives his body a great relax and boost of energy but does not rest his brain, so he is mentally tired and finds it difficult to concentratete and to control all the extra energy his body has. Does any one have experience with dealing with this?

I live next to a freeway and can’t get any sleep at night. I was wondering if anyone knew of any powerful over the counter sleeping pills or liquids. I need something that’ll put me into a deep sleep because i’m a very light sleeper and it’s impossible for me to get any sleep because of the freeway.

Our 18-month old male goldenlabradoodle was diagnosed with narcolepsy/cataplexy on October 7, 2010. He has periods where he collapses into a deep sleep – mostly while eating or while going for a walk. We are second-guessing the diagnosis, however, and wonder what other conditions might cause Duke to collapse into a cataplexic state other than narcolepsy.

Are you still an atheist when you are not consciously aware? Do you have to constantly think in your mind that you are an atheist? If a person is in a coma and can’t make the judgment of whether there is a God or not, still an atheist?

Why or why not?
Astro:
I got a feeling that anything and everything a christian says you will have the same sentiment. That is why I could careless about an atheist judgment of me. It is all the same.
"My state of consciousness does nothing to alter that fact"
Unfortunately for you, I do read atheist answers. If you are unconscious you can’t think. That is why a person will lose their memory or not remember somethings when unconscious.
You can’t think of anything when you are asleep. Especially in a deep sleep.
I never discouraged an answer from this question. I am getting the responses that atheists give. I am not surprised by what atheists say or the matter at which they say it.
Da-van?
Damn, well thanks.

anyway in the 2nd stage you halluncinate, so are you still an atheist in the 2nd stage of sleep. are you only an atheist when you are awake. that is what i want to know.

If people say I am an atheist because "I know" that there is no God. Knowledge has to have thought. So if you are sleeping you are not thinking. I guess the same can apply to believers too.

Lately I’ve been getting really annoyed that I can only get 2-4 hours of sleep a day. Is there any easy way to get sleepy and get some deep sleep by using things easily accessible/cheap at home?

My alarm goes off at about 5:55 AM. If I wake up at 5:15, feeling somewhat awake or refreshed, should I wake up? Does this mean that I have "completed the sleep cycle" or something (gone from deep sleep back up to REM and now I am simply ready to wake up)? If I fall back asleep at 5:15, will I begin to sleep more deeply and then feel less refreshed when I wake up again at 5:55?

Thank you for your answers

A question about rem sleep and dreams?

Ive heard that you can only dream during rem sleep, I have also heard that it takes at least 4 hours to get into that stage of sleep. If this is true, them how can I go to sleep for a half hour and have a dream?
I guess I worded that wrong. What I ment is that I do dream, All of the time. and I do remember my dreams. I work overnghts and have 2 small children, so I dont get a lot of sleep at once. 2 hours hear an hour there. This should make it impossable to fall in such a deep sleep that I dream.
