How does an insomniac make it thru the day?

I suffer from severe chronic insomnia. It’s horrible. I don’t take meds or anything I just try my best to deal with it.
So does anyone have any good tips on how to get through the day when you have insomnia and you’re tired and confused all the time? How do you deal with work, school, love, stress, etc?
I don’t need tips on how to fall asleep, as I’ve tried everything in the book. I’d just like to know how other insomniacs cope with everyday life.

I don’t know much about reflexology, just that certain places on the hands and feet correspond to various other parts of the body and its organs. But does reflexology offer anything in the way of help for better sleep? I’ve had chronic insomnia following a traumatic event a decade ago. It’s hard for me to fall asleep, stay asleep, or sleep deeply, and my health has really suffered as a result. No pharmaceuticals (I’ve tried them ALL), herbal remedies or "sleep hygiene" tips I’ve been given over the years has done a bit of good. I’m planning to try hynpnotherapy, EMDR and Alpha-Stim soon with a new, very experienced therapist, but was also curious about reflexology.

I am wondering how I would go about getting pentobarbital for my chronic insomnia. I am often up for days at a time and have tried all other sleeping medications (ambien, melatonin, etc, you name it, I’ve tried it). I really believe this might be the solution to my problem. How would I go about getting some? Can a doctor prescribe it for me?

I’m talking about depression and schizophrenia mainly. It’s been documented that people who are deprived of sleep for long periods of time will show symptoms of psychosis, and people with depression tend to sleep in longer and feel fewer symptoms when they are well-rested. Could the conscious behavior of the mentally ill be symptoms of prolonged improper sleep, as if only a part of their brain had chronic insomnia and was the source of the malfunction?

Sleep Problems, is it insomnia?

Hello, I’ve always had sleep problems since I was a kid and I’m not certain if it is insomnia, or just me. It usually takes around 2-3 hours to fall asleep (every night unless I am sick) and I tend to get frustrated over stupid things that I regret later. I heard insomnia is something that people experience at one point, or their whole life, having trouble sleeping or staying asleep or both. Usually while laying down I have too much going on in my head and I can’t seem to tone it down. Does insomnia effect the whole night or just takes several hours for one to fall asleep? My question is, is my sleeping problem chronic insomnia or just me?

I have been diagnosed with dysthymia as well as various phobias and IBS. I also have very severe chronic insomnia that my psychiatrist says is part of my chronic depression. I tend to sleep 2-5 hours a night, if at all. When I do sleep, I have very vivid, disturbing nightmares. So far, I’ve tried the drugs Prozac and Celexa. Neither helped with the depression; Prozac worsened my IBS and made me lose weight, although it did help a little bit with the insomnia, and Celexa killed what little was left of my appetite, made me lose ten pounds (which is pretty bad for someone with an already low BMI), worsened my sleep disorder and made me feel like I had the flu (constant puking, dizzyness and achyness).

My shrink recommends that I try Zoloft next, but a big part of me wants to stay away from SSRIs because I reacted so badly to the ones I’ve taken (both of which were supposedly "mild SSRIs"). Lately, I’ve been looking for atypical antidepressants that are helpful for sleep disorders and have little risk of weight loss or digestive side effects. I came across Remeron in my search, and a friend of mine who has been on nearly every antidepressant on the market recommends Trazodone. I’ve researched them both, and both sound equally attractive to me. I like Remeron for its reduced risk of digestive side effects and weight loss and for its superb track record for curing sleep disorders. Still, the risk of weight gain holds me back a little. I could stand to gain 10 or 20 pounds, but the idea of putting on any more weight than that does not sound at all appealing to me, and gaining obscene amounts of weight is not unheard of with Remeron. I like Trazodone, again, for its good track record with sleep disorders and lowered risk of dependency. Still, I don’t like risk of diarrhea/constipation. Also, my friend who recommended the Trazodone told me that it’s usually prescribed with another antidepressant (he took it with Zoloft). I’m very medication sensitive, even before going on psych meds (even small doses of baby aspirin and antibiotics almost always give me stomach problems), so I’d like to avoid taking a cocktail of meds if I can.

Anyone have any experience with either of these drugs? If so, how did they effect you? Which one do you think would be better for my situation?

Cure for chronic insomnia?

I have chronic insomnia and have tried everything such as prescription sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs, natural remiedies etc. Nothing works! However, I did some research and found an article on brainwave entrainment… by Philip Tsang the author of "How to Beat Insomnia". I never heard of this as a remedy and I am tempted to try it out. Does anyone have any info on this as a cure. I want to know before spending for the book. Thanks

I am in pain! I already know that I have mild scoliosis, with my back looking like an ‘S’ both front to back and side to side on x-ray, and I’ve been to three chiropractors over the past twenty years with moderate success. Now, at age 47, I suffer from very bad upper back and neck pain, stiffness and muscle spasms, and I have pain in my right hip and knee joints that is occasional but pretty bad when it hits. I have chronic insomnia for thirteen years that has been drug resistant, and this discomfort only adds to it. I’m not adverse to alternative medicine, but I need something that’s going to give me some quick relief!

I’ve had chronic insomnia for a really long time, and I’ve tried just about everything imaginable. Nothing really works. Last night, a friend told me she’d heard that eating lettuce at bedtime is supposed to help you fall asleep and sleep more soundly. She went on to say she’d heard that the Chinese are known to feed babies lettuce to get them to sleep. I’ve never heard of such a thing. Is there any truth to it?

‘ve had chronic insomnia since I was a baby. It went unnoticed until I was in jr. high and began taking a cold capsule at bedtime when I could not sleep and that helped back then. I was taken to many doctors as I grew up but they always told my mother there was nothing wrong with me and sent me home being scolding for faking illness. I wasn’t faking. I was a very sickly child, chronically fatigue, with little interest in the world and people around me. When I am able to sleep well for at least 8 hours I feel almost normal. But without medication, my brain does not shut down enough to sleep. I quickly develope a tolerance to medications, then the doses are increased which increases the severity or their side effects. I was born a type A Personality and it kills me to sit home when I want to be working. But without a long term relief from my insomnia I cannot work . I need to find a new sleep aid that doesn’t cause me to sleep walk. I’ve already tried all the natural remedies
