<p>I have just been diagnosed by my sleep specialist after doing an overnight sleep study that I have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. He says that my daytime fatigue and sleepiness is due to the fact that I wake up multiple times a night because of my difficulty breathing (consciously and unconsciously). However, he told me that I did reach deep REM sleep and did dream. So I&#8217;m not entirely sure I understand why this makes me tired throughout the day. I understand there are five stages of sleep, so if I wake up during any of these stages, mainly the deep sleep stage, does that mean my sleep cycle starts over? Am I tired because I don&#8217;t spend an adequate (and constant) amount of time in deep sleep (restorative sleep)?</p>
<p>And what exactly is the difference between REM and NREM and which one gives restorative sleep?</p>

<p>What exactly causes the memory/cognitive impairment and difficulty in concentration?

<p>For the last two nights i have been having sleeping problems. On Monday night i only slept for around 2 or 3 hours and i woke up again and it took me a similar amount of time to get back to sleep. On Tuesday night i actually got to sleep quicker, but i only stayed asleep for around 2 and a half hours, it did not take me long to get back to sleep on this night though.</p>
<p>Does anyone have any suggestions for what could be causing this?</p>
<p>Some more sleeping details:</p>
<p>I walked the dog for around half a hour during the day, i had a hot shower before going to bed, i watched a film before i started trying to get to sleep.

<p>My sons councler recommend trying melatonin at bedtime to see if that helps him sleep because he hasn&#8217;t ever slept through the night and has short REM cycles.  Has anyone ever heard of this and/or tried it?  I gave it to him 2 nights now but he also has a cold right now so I don&#8217;t know if that is also affecting the sleep so the pill isn&#8217;t helping or if he just needs to be on it for a certain amount of time before it can start to work.  My 3 year old also doesn&#8217;t sleep through the night so I was going to ask about him taking it as well if it works for the 5 year old.  BTW my mom, myself and even my grandma (my moms mom) don&#8217;t sleep well either, never have with really short REM cycles.
