After nursing and diapering, my 5 week old will only stay awake for 30 min to an hour before needing to go back down for a nap. He is very alert during that time… it’s just a short amount of time sometimes! How long will your 5 week old go before needing to nap?

I’m trying to decide whether I should work at an animal rescue center that puts the animals to sleep after a certain amount of time not being adopted or at a center that doesn’t put animals to sleep. I want to support the one that doesn’t put the animals to sleep, but at the same time feel like the animals in the kill center need my help more.

I’ve been taking Ambien almost daily for about 2 years now. I hardly feel it anymore. I know everyone is different, but is there a general amount of time I can stop taking it to lower my tolerance so I can start to feel it again?

I have just been diagnosed by my sleep specialist after doing an overnight sleep study that I have Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. He says that my daytime fatigue and sleepiness is due to the fact that I wake up multiple times a night because of my difficulty breathing (consciously and unconsciously). However, he told me that I did reach deep REM sleep and did dream. So I’m not entirely sure I understand why this makes me tired throughout the day. I understand there are five stages of sleep, so if I wake up during any of these stages, mainly the deep sleep stage, does that mean my sleep cycle starts over? Am I tired because I don’t spend an adequate (and constant) amount of time in deep sleep (restorative sleep)?
And what exactly is the difference between REM and NREM and which one gives restorative sleep?
Thanks in advance! Sorry for all the questions.
Oh and one more thing…
What exactly causes the memory/cognitive impairment and difficulty in concentration?

For the last two nights i have been having sleeping problems. On Monday night i only slept for around 2 or 3 hours and i woke up again and it took me a similar amount of time to get back to sleep. On Tuesday night i actually got to sleep quicker, but i only stayed asleep for around 2 and a half hours, it did not take me long to get back to sleep on this night though.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what could be causing this?
Some more sleeping details:
I walked the dog for around half a hour during the day, i had a hot shower before going to bed, i watched a film before i started trying to get to sleep.

Disruptions in the normal patterns of sleep are one of the main characteristics of major depression. How are normal sleep patterns disrupted?
Your answer:
a – The amount of time spent in nondreaming, deeply relaxed sleep doubles or triples during major depression.
b – Depressed people often awaken spontaneously at 3:00 or 4:00 o’clock in the morning and cannot get back to sleep even though they are still tired.
c – Although depressed people sleep and dream much less than normal, they claim that they feel adequately rested by their sleep.
d – Periods of dreaming REM sleep occur in 90 – minute cycles.

I’m usually up around 5am everyday, even when I’m in bed around 1am. I need to change this because school starts in less then a month. Is there anything I can do besides limit the amount of time I spend on the computer and the amount of television I watch? Are there any tricks to fall asleep faster and better?

My sons councler recommend trying melatonin at bedtime to see if that helps him sleep because he hasn’t ever slept through the night and has short REM cycles. Has anyone ever heard of this and/or tried it? I gave it to him 2 nights now but he also has a cold right now so I don’t know if that is also affecting the sleep so the pill isn’t helping or if he just needs to be on it for a certain amount of time before it can start to work. My 3 year old also doesn’t sleep through the night so I was going to ask about him taking it as well if it works for the 5 year old. BTW my mom, myself and even my grandma (my moms mom) don’t sleep well either, never have with really short REM cycles.

My psychiatrist suspects that I spend too much time in the REM stage of sleep. He mentioned a sleep study perhaps in the future, but is there anything I can do NOW to decrease the amount of time I spend in REM sleep?

Hey guys, I have a question for you. I’m 22 and have been having problems with fatigue. I recently did a sleep study and the tech running it told me I had a "very low amount of time in rem sleep". Only a doc can get me a legit diagnosis and that will take two weeks for her to get around to it. What might cause REM sleep deprivation?
Also, I got stats back that say I have 89% oxygen saturation.

Sometimes when I go to sleep and right before I fall asleep I become temporarily paralyzed. The amount of time varies but usually does not last longer than10-20 seconds. I also sometime feel presence in the room, and their have been some occasions that i would see an illusion that someone is standing over my bed.
1) What is this called?
2)Is it normal?
3)How do I prevent it?
4)Why does this happen?
Thanks

Let me first say that I am not a lazy person….but I can sleep unlimited amount of time and still be tired. I sleep through my alarm clock and don’t get up on time to go to class (college)…it’s caused problems between my husband and I because I sleep too late on the weekends, etc. My sleeping habits, problem…whatever you call it has caused distress in my life in more ways than one. And I have tried to fix it, and tell myself…damnit, you’re getting up at __ in the morning, and I never can seem to do it…I just keep hitting the snooze, telling myself that I’ll get up in 10 more min, and next thing I know it’s 4 hours later. Please help!
