Is it possible to skip sleep stages?

For what I’ve heard (I might be with the wrong idea though) dreams happen in the REM sleep stages (or at least those they are remembered) either way, even if it is possible to dreams to happen in other stages I always get the information that they never happen in the first’s sleep stages. Now….When I wake up by my alarm clock I usually look at the time (after having a 8 hours sleep) then I try to get up of the bed but I close my eyes just for a second to "rest my eyes" and I fall asleep imediatly and sometimes I wake up right away and look again at the clock, at it is exacly the same time. Which means I slept less than a minute (possibly just seconds) and in that time I had dreams, and I mean really long dreams, like 30mins to 1 day (in ‘dream-time’ not physical time) I usually have dreams that last for weeks in dream-time but in those seconds I had a really long memorable and elaborated dream. (With a plot and consistence and so on) which means in was a "good" dream. Basically what I’m trying to say is how is it possible for me to skip 2-3 sleep stages directly to REM? or I had my dream in sleep stage 1? And it was a "good" dream like those we only have by a restfull night and by "good" I mean that it wasnt "random" (like those dreams that doesnt make any sence or logic that people have when they have poor sleep). How is this possible?

I feel like a loser. I set my alarm clock to ring at 7:00am last night to do homework. Then this morning it rang at 12:54pm. And I have to go to work in an hour and come back at 9pm.
I have so much homework. I can I do or eat to make me not as sleepy?
I am in grade 10 so don’t suggest smoking and other stupid things. Serious answers please.

Is it okay to have a 6-hour sleep on Ambien?

I took a pill last night at midnight (12am), and woke up at 6am ’cause I forgot to switch my alarm clock. Is it okay to have a 6-hour sleep on Ambien, when I saw that I should take Ambien for a 7-8 hour sleep?

Every alarm clock I have ever had has a 9 minute snooze. This seems pretty standard. Is there any logical reason why the snooze would be 9 minutes? Does it coincide with a REM cycle or other circadian rhythm?

Why is it that when you wake up, and your still tired, you press the snooze button, but 10 minutes later the alarm goes off and you feel wide awake? I know no sleep actually occurs, in order for you to enter back into a rem cycle it can take 30 minutes to an hour, with an average time being 45 minutes. So your not actually resting, your more or less just in a passed the fuck out state of mind.

Also what is with it with the time of the snooze timer itself, is there some actual science behind the notion that it takes roughly 10 minutes for your body to wake up and the sensation of being tired to leave your system, or is it just some random number the clock makers came up with and put on the clock to try and make some extra money by at one time saying our alarm clock can do something that no other alarm clock can?

I usually get about 4-6 hours of sleep a night, and I have to wake up at 4:45 every weekday. I am a high school student, and it is really hard to wake up in the morning. I use this alarm clock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93RvM7NnpJU
(you put the vibrator piece under your pillow,) yet I can still sleep through it sometimes. Even if it does wake me up, I am often in a semi-sleep state, and I turn the alarm off without realizing it, and I go back to sleep. My parents think I have much more trouble waking up than a normal teenager, even considering the circumstances, and they don’t like having to wake me up, usually several times each morning. In the afternoon, it is common for me to take naps accidentally, because I am so tired. I take 50 mg of Zoloft every night. Could my sleep problems be because of Zoloft?

Sleeping Problems.?

For the past few months I’ve noticed my sleeping problems are getting worse. Last night Went to Sleep about 1:30am , today woke up about 3:00pm. Thats Over 12 hours of sleep and its been happening alot. I don’ know what to do any more, I can’t even wake up to an alarm clock anymore, what should I do?
Err, well I do go outside alot and as for a xbox I hardly even touch it. Plus I’ve got school so which stops that. As for alarm clocks I got 2 set up in my room and I still can’t wake up to them.

As I understand it, sleep occurs in five stages. 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM, and it takes approximately 90 minutes to complete one cycle. Now I have been led to believe that once awake, one must pass through all stages again to reach the REM stage, where dreams occur. I’m curious to know if one can not so much "skip" stages, but hold or maintain a state just out of REM while conscious for a period, then fall back into a dream state. I ask because for all I can figure, this seems to happen with myself. There are instances where I have been in the middle of a dream when my alarm clock goes off, but I wanted to continue dreaming so I would get up and hit snooze, look at the clock and decide whether or not I had the time to spare, and if I did, I’d lay right back down and from what I can tell, fall right back into the dream state, because sure enough, ten minutes later the alarm would ring again. Sometimes if the dream was really interesting enough and getting up was not immediately important, I’d end up repeating this several times.

Any ideas on what exactly this could be? Is it possible that I am holding perhaps a stage 2 state of consciousness at that point? Also I’ve noticed that sometimes while this is happening I almost feel conscious, as in I can feel myself lying in bed and the dream feels almost like I’m watching a movie in my head.

How to deal with sleeping problems??

I wonder if anyone could help me. Here’s the thing: i’ve been in school break for two months now and that means i usually go to bed at about 2 am, and I usually wake up with an alarm clock at 11 for breakfast then lunch immediately after breakfast. My problem is that I have problems sleeping, I usually stay an hour or two in bed trying to get some sleep and so I really have a hard time getting 2 sleep. Second thing is when my alarm sounds at 11 I wake up but I cant manage to get up and I immediately fall asleep. I have tried listening to music with my headphones in bed in order to stay awake but I still fall asleep again.
Anyone could help me dealing with these falling asleep/waking up problems???
I can’t get up earlier since I know it’s not worth it, I prefer sleeping. And I never take naps.
