Is it better to sleep on your back or side?

I know stomach sleeping is bad for your back, but I haven’t found anything authoritative about whether side or back sleeping is better. If possible, please cite a medical source; I’ve already found plenty of people’s personal opinions. Thanks!

side- there is pressure on your lungs when you’re on your back.
I had back surgery 15 years ago. My doctor, an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Narishima Reddy, told me to never sleep on my back. He told me to buy a body pillow and sleep on my side in the fetal position, with the pillow between my legs and my arm draped over it. He maintained that was the best position to keep your spine straight. This is the only source I know of, and it has always worked for me.
