This is a trick I learned in high school to help me clear my mind. It works wonders for me.

It's very similar to meditation. In fact, I guess it could be considered that.

Anyways, as I am lying in bed, I try to flex each of my muscles at a time, and hold them flexed for a few seconds....and then relax.

Usually I start from my feet, then go to calves, then thighs, and so on. When you have gone all the way up to your head, you feel very calm, and it usually helps ease my mind.

Try not to move a muscle that you have already relaxed.

Good luck!

Oh, and if you think this is the best answer, please select it as such!

Get more exercise, at least an hour a day - this alone will help your problem a lot.
Don't drink caffeine (soda pop, tea, coffee, energy drinks, etc) after 3 pm.
Keep your bedroom dark, cool and quiet. Use a fan for white noise.
Keep pets out of your bedroom. They disrupt your sleep.

Good luck.

yes it takes imagination but it works for me, before you sleep when you're lying in bed, picture a nice green hill and a hot air baloon, think of your problems (or what you're thinking about) and in your mind put them in seperate boxes and tie them up.. put the "boxes" in the "hot air baloon" and then imagine it flying away.. sounds stupid and when someone told me i was like what the hell.. haha but it really clears my head and works for me.. try it tonight

Exercise more. It will make a huge difference.
Have some herbal tea towards the end of the day, but not right before you go to bed (to avoid having to get up to go to the bathroom).
Avoid caffeine after mid-afternoon.
